How it works

The 8 Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Gentle Foaming Cleanser is a 150ml foam cleanser, used as your first step, morning and evening, on a face already wet with lukewarm water. The humectant it is built around is Sodium Hyaluronate, named tenth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Zinc PCA, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein and Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, so the humectant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Sodium Hyaluronate stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the foam cleanser format rather than by the list alone. Anua sells this Sodium Hyaluronate foam cleanser in Korea, and this is that version.

Key benefits

  • Sodium Hyaluronate, the humectant this foam cleanser is built around
  • Zinc PCA on the same list, an active
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein on the same list, a protein
  • Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid and Hyaluronic Acid on the same list, humectants
  • Potassium Hyaluronate and Panthenol further down the same list
  • Sodium Hyaluronate named tenth on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Sodium Hyaluronatehumectant

Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it. The name on the box points at it, and it is named tenth on this foam cleanser's own ingredient list.

Zinc PCAactive

Zinc PCA pairs zinc with the humectant PCA. It is used in oily and blemish-prone formulas for the look of shine and visible pores, and it hydrates at the same time. It is named eighteenth on this foam cleanser's list, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Proteinprotein

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein is plant protein cut into water-soluble fragments. It forms a light conditioning film that holds water at the surface. It is named eighth on this foam cleanser's list, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acidhumectant

Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid is hyaluronic acid cut into much shorter fragments. The smaller the fragment, the further into the outer layer it can settle, which is why serums stack several sizes together instead of using one. It is named eleventh on this foam cleanser's list, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

Hyaluronic Acidhumectant

Hyaluronic Acid is a sugar chain the body already makes, and one gram of it can hold several litres of water. In a formula it is a humectant that pulls water to the surface of skin and holds it in a film, which is what makes skin look plumper while it is there. It is named thirteenth on this foam cleanser's list, alongside Sodium Hyaluronate.

How to use

  1. Wet your face with lukewarm water, then work a small amount of the gel into a light foam between your palms.
  2. Massage over the face for about thirty seconds, avoiding direct contact with the eyes, then rinse thoroughly.
  3. Move straight into your toner while skin is still slightly damp, rather than letting it air dry first.
  4. Do not rinse with hot water, since heat strips more of the surfactant's residual hyaluronic acid film than lukewarm water does.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this foam cleanser on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Sodium Hyaluronate on the list.
  • Introduce this foam cleanser on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Sodium Hyaluronate rather than to three changes at once.
