How it works
The Heartleaf 77 B3Zinc Soothing Serum is a 30ml serum, used after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening. The active it is built around is Zinc PCA, named ninth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Niacinamide, Adenosine and Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Zinc PCA stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the serum format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the serum Anua sells in Korea, Zinc PCA and all.
Key benefits
- Zinc PCA, the active this serum is built around
- Niacinamide, Adenosine, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate and Allantoin on the same list, actives
- Gluconolactone and Capryloyl Salicylic Acid further down the same list
- Pyridoxine HCl and Sphingomonas Ferment Extract further down the same list
- Zinc PCA named ninth on the manufacturer list printed on this page
- Sourced for the Korean market, not a US-shelf reformulation of this serum
Inside the formula
Inside the formula
Where does this serum go in my routine?
After toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening. Anything thinner than a serum goes on before it, and anything richer goes on after. If you are adding it to a routine you already like, give it a week on its own first, so what you see is the Zinc PCA and not three changes at once.
Is this the Korean-market serum or a US version?
The Korean-market one, Zinc PCA and all. We match this serum to its Korean barcode before it reaches the shelf, which is the check that tells you which market release you are holding.
What else is on the list besides Zinc PCA?
Niacinamide, Adenosine and Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate. The order they are printed in on this serum's panel is the order on the box, so you can see where Zinc PCA sits relative to them. Further down the same panel: Allantoin, Gluconolactone and Capryloyl Salicylic Acid.
Not on the ingredient list below: fragrance or parfum, denatured or SD alcohol, essential oils, silicones, parabens, sulfate surfactants, mineral oil or petrolatum and added color.

29 of 31 explained
- Houttuynia Cordata Flower/Leaf/Stem Water (77%) plant extract
- Heartleaf water, taken from the whole plant above ground. Korean formulas use it as a base in place of water, where it is far more dilute than the extract of the same plant.
- Niacinamide (5%) active
- Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.
- 1,2-Hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- Panthenol humectant
- Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Dipropylene Glycol humectant
- Dipropylene Glycol is a glycol used as a solvent and a light humectant. Its main job is keeping the rest of the formula dissolved and the texture fluid rather than adding hydration of its own.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- Sodium Citrate pH adjuster
- Sodium Citrate is the salt of citric acid, used as a buffer: it holds a formula at a steady pH rather than pushing it in one direction. It is also a mild chelator.
- Zinc Pca (1%) active
- Zinc PCA pairs zinc with the humectant PCA. It is used in oily and blemish-prone formulas for the look of shine and visible pores, and it hydrates at the same time.
- Propanediol humectant
- Propanediol is a plant-derived glycol used in place of propylene glycol. It hydrates, carries actives into solution, and gives a lighter, less sticky slip than glycerin at the same strength.
- Trehalose humectant
- Trehalose is a sugar that some desert plants use to survive drying out. In skincare it is a humectant that holds water in the outer layer and helps a formula feel comfortable rather than tight.
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
17 more explained
- Betaine humectant
- Betaine is a sugar-beet-derived humectant that cells use to hold water. In a formula it hydrates and takes the edge off cleansers and acids, which is why it often appears alongside them.
- Xanthan Gum thickener
- Xanthan Gum is a polysaccharide made by fermenting sugar. It thickens a watery formula into a gel and holds the whole thing in suspension so nothing separates. Too much of it and a serum turns stringy, which is why it appears in fractions of a percent.
- Sphingomonas Ferment Extract ferment
- Sphingomonas Ferment Extract is the liquid left after Sphingomonas bacteria have fermented a sugar substrate. It carries water-holding polysaccharides and is used as a conditioning ferment.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- Citric Acid pH adjuster
- Citric Acid is used in tiny amounts to bring a formula to the pH its actives need, not as an exfoliant at that level. It is an AHA, so at much higher concentrations it can also exfoliate.
- Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin solvent
- Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin is a ring-shaped sugar that traps an active molecule inside itself, keeping it stable and releasing it slowly. It is a delivery shell rather than an active.
- Adenosine active
- Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated.
- Disodium EDTA chelator
- EDTA is a chelator: it locks up trace metal ions from water and packaging that would otherwise turn a formula cloudy, off-colour or rancid. It does nothing to skin and appears at a fraction of a percent.
- Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate active
- Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is a water-soluble salt derived from licorice root. It is the licorice fraction Korean formulas use for the look of redness, and it is far more stable in water than the whole extract.
- Glyceryl Acrylate/Acrylic Acid Copolymer film former
- This is a polymer that forms a moisture-holding film on the surface, usually supplied with glycerin and propylene glycol as a hydrating complex.
- Gluconolactone exfoliant
- Gluconolactone is a PHA, the gentlest exfoliant class. Its molecule is too large to penetrate quickly, so it smooths the surface without the sting of an AHA, and it is a humectant at the same time.
- Tocopherol antioxidant
- Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer.
- Allantoin active
- Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin.
- Pyridoxine Hcl vitamin
- Pyridoxine HCl is the water-soluble salt of vitamin B6. It is a conditioning vitamin, most often part of a B-complex blend.
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid exfoliant
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid is salicylic acid with a fatty tail, sometimes sold as LHA. It stays nearer the surface than salicylic acid and works at a higher pH, so it exfoliates more evenly and more gently.
- Isoquercitrin antioxidant
- Isoquercitrin is quercetin with a glucose unit attached, which makes it far more water soluble than quercetin itself. It is used as a plant flavonoid antioxidant.
- Quercetin antioxidant
- Quercetin is one of the most widespread plant flavonoids, found in onion skin, apple peel and tea. It is a plant antioxidant and is yellow, so it tints a formula.

How to use
- Apply it after your toner while the skin is still damp, so a few drops cover the whole face.
- Press it over the entire face including the jaw, since spot treating leaves visible edges behind.
- Follow with a moisturiser once it has dried down, which takes under a minute.
- Do not stack it with a strong acid or a retinoid on the same night while your skin is getting used to it.
Worth knowing
- Patch test this serum on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Zinc PCA on the list.
- Citric Acid and Gluconolactone on this list makes this serum an exfoliating step, so do not stack it with another one on the same night.
