Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Glycerin humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

Cetyl Ethylhexanoate emollient

Cetyl Ethylhexanoate is a synthetic ester used as a dry-feeling emollient. It spreads easily, leaves a silky rather than oily finish, and helps disperse pigments and UV filters evenly.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride emollient

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is the light fraction of coconut oil, with the heavy parts removed. It is the workhorse emollient of modern formulas: it softens skin, dissolves oil-soluble actives and absorbs without the greasy weight of a whole plant oil.

Cetearyl Alcohol fatty alcohol

Cetearyl Alcohol is a waxy solid, not the drying kind of alcohol. It is a blend of cetyl and stearyl alcohols used to thicken a cream and keep oil and water from separating, and it softens skin as it does so.

Cetyl Alcohol fatty alcohol

Cetyl Alcohol is a waxy fatty alcohol from coconut or palm, unrelated to drying ethanol. It thickens creams, stabilises the emulsion and leaves skin feeling softer.

Behentrimonium Methosulfate emulsifier

A mild cationic conditioning agent built from rapeseed fatty acid. It sits on the surface with a positive charge, which is why it detangles and smooths, and it also helps hold an emulsion together.

Stearyl Alcohol fatty alcohol

Stearyl Alcohol is a solid fatty alcohol used to thicken and stabilise creams. Like the other fatty alcohols it is an emollient, not a solvent.

Panthenol humectant

Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.

Hydrolyzed Corn Protein protein

Hydrolyzed Corn Protein is corn protein cut into small soluble pieces. On a label it usually sits with two or three other plant proteins, because each brings a different amino acid balance.

Hydrolyzed Soy Protein protein

Hydrolyzed Soy Protein is soy protein cut into water-soluble fragments. It conditions the surface and holds water, and it is one of the most used plant proteins in cosmetics.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein protein

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein is wheat protein broken into fragments small enough to dissolve in water. It holds water at the surface and leaves a smooth film, which is why it is as common in hair products as in skincare.
