How it works

An oil cleansing balm works by matching oil to oil: the balm's oil and wax base binds to sunscreen, sebum and makeup pigment on contact, loosening what water alone cannot lift. Massaging the solid balm with dry hands melts it into a slip that carries residue off the surface rather than pushing it deeper. Adding a little water partway through the massage flips the balm into a milky emulsion, the cue that it is ready to rinse clean instead of leaving an oily film behind. This is step one of Korean double cleansing, and it is built to hand off to a second, water-based cleanser rather than to finish the job alone.

Key benefits

  • Melts sunscreen, sebum and makeup on contact instead of requiring a harsh scrub
  • Turns milky with water so it rinses clean without an oily residue
  • Sits as step one of a Korean double cleanse, handing off to a gentler second cleanser
  • Massages onto a completely dry face, which is the correct way to use any oil cleanser
  • Comes in the Original formulation, one of several Clean It Zero variants built for different skin needs

How to use

  1. Scoop a small, pea to almond sized amount with dry hands and warm it between your palms until it turns clear. Massage over a completely dry face, working into makeup, sunscreen and the T-zone for thirty to sixty seconds. Add a splash of water and continue massaging until the balm turns milky, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow with a water-based cleanser rather than skipping straight to toner.

Worth knowing

  • Avoid the eye area if the balm is not labeled for it, since a fragranced formula can sting
  • Rinse thoroughly, since a balm left half emulsified can feel greasy rather than clean
