Key actives

Capryloyl Salicylic Acidexfoliant

Capryloyl Salicylic Acid is salicylic acid with a fatty tail, sometimes sold as LHA. It stays nearer the surface than salicylic acid and works at a higher pH, so it exfoliates more evenly and more gently. On this cleansing balm's own ingredient list it is named fifteenth.

Salicylic Acidexfoliant

It loosens the dead cells that block pores and is used for the look of congested, oily skin. It is named sixteenth on this cleansing balm's list, alongside Capryloyl Salicylic Acid.

Gluconolactoneexfoliant

Gluconolactone is a PHA, the gentlest exfoliant class. It is named twentieth on this cleansing balm's list, alongside Capryloyl Salicylic Acid.

Lactobacillus Fermentferment

Lactobacillus Ferment is the liquid left after lactobacillus bacteria have fermented a plant or milk substrate. It carries the small molecules the fermentation produced, including lactic acid and amino acids, and is used for the look of dull, uneven skin. It is named twenty-first on this cleansing balm's list, alongside Capryloyl Salicylic Acid.

Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Extractplant extract

Tea Tree Leaf Extract is the water-based extract rather than the essential oil, so it is far milder and much less aromatic. It is used in formulas for blemish-prone skin. It is named tenth on this cleansing balm's list, alongside Capryloyl Salicylic Acid.

How to use

  1. Scoop a small, pea to almond sized amount with dry hands and warm it between your palms until it turns clear. Massage over a completely dry face, working into makeup, sunscreen and the T-zone for thirty to sixty seconds. Add a splash of water and continue massaging until the balm turns milky, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow with a water-based cleanser rather than skipping straight to toner.

How it works

The Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm Pore Clarifying is a 100ml cleansing balm, used as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin, before any water reaches the face. The exfoliant it is built around is Capryloyl Salicylic Acid, named fifteenth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Salicylic Acid, Gluconolactone and Lactobacillus Ferment, so the exfoliant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Capryloyl Salicylic Acid stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the cleansing balm format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the cleansing balm BANILA CO sells in Korea, Capryloyl Salicylic Acid and all.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this cleansing balm on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Capryloyl Salicylic Acid on the list.
  • This list names Fragrance, so skip it if fragrance components are something you avoid.
  • Citric Acid and Gluconolactone on this list makes this cleansing balm an exfoliating step, so do not stack it with another one on the same night.

What professionals say

What skin-care professionals say about the key actives in this formula, quoted from the medical sources linked beside each.

  • BHAs like salicylic acid get really deep into the pores, whereas the water-soluble ones don't go as deep.

  • Those bacteria are essential to fight infection, protect against environmental damage, regulate pH levels and keep the skin hydrated and healthy.

  • This means that gluconolactone acts as an exfoliating acid, but also as a moisturizer. It has moisturizing, soothing, and lightening properties, working well on dry skin.
