Vitamin C Serum is Benton's ampoule serum (30ml), built around Ascorbic Acid and 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid. It is used after toner and before moisturizer, as the routine's concentrated treatment step. This is over-labeled in English for US sale rather than reformulated for the US market.

How it works

The Vitamin C Serum is a 30ml serum, used after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening. The antioxidant it is built around is Ascorbic Acid, named second on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Adenosine, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid and Ferulic Acid, so the antioxidant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Ascorbic Acid stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the serum format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the serum Benton sells in Korea, Ascorbic Acid and all.

Key benefits

  • Ascorbic Acid, the antioxidant this serum is built around
  • Adenosine on the same list, an active
  • 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Ferulic Acid and Glutathione on the same list, antioxidants
  • Tocotrienols and Tocopherol further down the same list
  • Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil and Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil further down the same list
  • Ascorbic Acid named second on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Ascorbic Acidantioxidant

Ascorbic Acid is pure vitamin C, the most researched form and also the least stable: it needs a low pH and airtight packaging to stay active. It is an antioxidant used for the look of dullness and uneven tone. The name on the box points at it, and it is named second on this serum's own ingredient list.

Adenosineactive

Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated. The panel names it fourteenth on this serum's list, beside Ascorbic Acid.

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acidantioxidant

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is a stable vitamin C derivative that skin converts to ascorbic acid. It survives in a formula far better than pure vitamin C and works at a gentler pH, so it suits skin that finds the pure acid uncomfortable. It is named eighth on this serum's list, alongside Ascorbic Acid.

Ferulic Acidantioxidant

Ferulic Acid is a plant antioxidant from bran and seeds. Its main formulation job is stabilising vitamins C and E so a serum keeps working for longer, which is why the three appear together so often. It is named fifteenth on this serum's list, alongside Ascorbic Acid.

Glutathioneantioxidant

Glutathione is a small peptide the body uses as one of its main antioxidants. In skincare it is used as an antioxidant and for the look of dullness; it is unstable in water, so formulas that carry it are usually built around protecting it. It is named seventeenth on this serum's list, alongside Ascorbic Acid.

How to use

  1. Apply it after your toner, while the face is still slightly damp, so a thin layer spreads without dragging.
  2. Three or four drops cover the whole face; press it in with the flats of the fingers rather than rubbing.
  3. Follow with a moisturizer within a minute so the thin layer has something holding it down.
  4. Do not stack it under a second serum doing the same job, since more layers is not the same as more result.

Worth knowing

  • New to this formula or to the brand: patch-test on the inner arm and wait a day before applying it to the face.
  • Discontinue use and rinse the area with water if redness, itching or irritation develops.
