How it works

The Low pH Niacinamide Micellar Cleansing Water is a cleansing water, used on dry skin as the first evening cleanse, before any water. The active it is built around is Niacinamide, named seventh on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Allantoin, Zinc PCA and Madecassoside, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Niacinamide stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the cleansing water format rather than by the list alone. COSRX sells this Niacinamide cleansing water in Korea, and this is that version.

Key benefits

  • Niacinamide, the active this cleansing water is built around
  • Allantoin, Zinc PCA and Madecassoside on the same list, actives
  • Panthenol on the same list, a humectant
  • Sodium Hyaluronate further down the same list
  • Niacinamide named seventh on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is the entry this cleansing water is named after, and the list carries it.

Allantoinactive

Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin. The panel names it sixth on this cleansing water's list, beside Niacinamide.

Zinc PCAactive

Zinc PCA pairs zinc with the humectant PCA. It is used in oily and blemish-prone formulas for the look of shine and visible pores, and it hydrates at the same time. The panel names it eighth on this cleansing water's list, beside Niacinamide.

Madecassosideactive

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams. It is named ninth on this cleansing water's list, alongside Niacinamide.

Panthenolhumectant

Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh. It is named fourth on this cleansing water's list, alongside Niacinamide.

How to use

  1. Use the Low pH Niacinamide Micellar Cleansing Water as your first cleansing step, on dry skin, before any water touches the face.
  2. Soak a cotton pad, sweep it over the face, then hold it against each eye for a few seconds before wiping.
  3. Follow with your usual gel or foam cleanser, then toner while the face is still damp.
  4. Once or twice a day, whenever there is makeup or sunscreen to lift. Do not scrub the pad back and forth over one spot; a soaked pad is a solvent rather than an eraser.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this cleansing water on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Niacinamide on the list.
  • Introduce this cleansing water on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Niacinamide rather than to three changes at once.
