WATER solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

DIISOSTEARYL MALATE emollient

Diisostearyl Malate is a thick, glossy ester used to hold pigment in suspension and give a cushioned shine. It is the standard emollient in lip products.

BIS-DIGLYCERYL POLYACYLADIPATE-2 emollient

Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2 is a thick synthetic emollient built to mimic the lipids in skin's own surface. It is used in balms for a cushioned, sealing feel.

OCTYLDODECANOL emollient

Octyldodecanol is a branched fatty alcohol used as an emollient and as a solvent for pigments and mineral powders. It thickens slightly and leaves a soft finish.

DIGLYCERIN humectant

Diglycerin is two glycerin units joined together. It holds water like glycerin but feels less tacky, so it is used where a formula needs hydration without drag.

ACRYLATES COPOLYMER film former

Acrylates Copolymer is a synthetic polymer that forms a film as the water leaves. It holds a formula in place, controls shine and helps a texture stay put.

1,2-HEXANEDIOL humectant

1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.

BIS-BEHENYL/ISOSTEARYL/PHYTOSTERYL DIMER DILINOLEYL DIMER DILINOLEATE emollient

A very large branched ester built on plant sterols. It thickens an oil phase without wax and gives sticks and balms their cling.

CETYL PEG/PPG-10/1 DIMETHICONE silicone

A silicone emulsifier used to hold water inside an oil or silicone phase. It is the standard emulsifier in a cushion or a silicone-based primer.

GLYCERIN humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

POLYSORBATE 60 emulsifier

Polysorbate 60 is a water-loving emulsifier used with a fatty co-emulsifier to build stable lotions and creams.

BUTYLENE GLYCOL humectant

Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
