Mica colorant

Mica is a mineral ground into fine flakes. It scatters light, so it lightens a shade and gives the soft glow of a tinted or illuminating product.

Synthetic Fluorphlogopite colorant

Synthetic mica, grown rather than mined, which makes it purer and more transparent than the natural mineral. It scatters light and carries pearlescent pigments.

Diisostearyl Malate emollient

Diisostearyl Malate is a thick, glossy ester used to hold pigment in suspension and give a cushioned shine. It is the standard emollient in lip products.

Hexyl Laurate emollient

A light ester emollient with a dry, fast-spreading feel. It also helps dissolve powders and pigments evenly.

Phenyl Trimethicone silicone

Phenyl Trimethicone is a silicone with a higher refractive index than most, so it adds visible gloss as well as slip. It is common in glow and lip textures.

Synthetic Wax occlusive

Synthetic Wax is a purpose-built hydrocarbon wax used to structure balms and sticks. It is odourless and does not oxidise, unlike most natural waxes.

Dipentaerythrityl Hexahydroxystearate/Hexastearate/Hexarosinate emollient

A thick rosin-bearing ester used in lip products for shine and staying power. It is what makes a gloss cling rather than slide off.

Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer absorbent

Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer is a polymer in fine sphere form. It absorbs oil, soft-focuses the look of texture and gives a powdery slip.

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil emollient

Sweet almond oil, one of the oldest cosmetic oils. It is high in oleic acid, which makes it richer and slower to absorb than the linoleic oils.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter emollient

Shea Butter is the fat pressed from the shea nut, rich in oleic and stearic acids and unsaponifiable plant sterols. It is a heavy emollient and partial occlusive, which is why it sits in balms and night creams rather than in essences.

Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil emollient

Argan Oil is pressed from the argan kernel and is rich in oleic and linoleic acids plus vitamin E. It is a medium-weight emollient that absorbs reasonably fast.

Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter emollient

Cocoa butter, pressed from the cacao bean. It is firm at room temperature, high in stearic and oleic acid, and used as a rich occlusive emollient.
