Water solvent: Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate surfactant: A sulfosuccinate surfactant: milder than a sulfate, with more foam than an amino-acid one. It is often used to soften a sulfate-based cleanser.
Coco-Betaine surfactant: Coco-Betaine is a coconut-derived secondary surfactant used to build foam and make a cleanser milder.
Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate surfactant: Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate is a very mild coconut-derived surfactant used in cleansers for reactive skin and around the eyes.
Lauryl Glucoside surfactant: A sugar surfactant made from glucose and a fatty alcohol. Glucosides carry no charge, which is what makes them mild, and they give a soft low foam.
Sodium Chloride* thickener: Sodium Chloride is salt. In a cleanser it thickens the liquid; in a mask or essence it balances the mineral content of the water phase. It has no active role.
Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate surfactant: A glutamic-acid surfactant from coconut fatty acids, and one of the mildest cleansing agents in wide use. It produces a soft, low foam.
Fragrance fragrance: Fragrance, or Parfum, is a single declaration standing for a whole scent blend, which can be dozens of materials. Regulators allow it as a trade secret, so a list showing only this word does not say what the scent is made of. It is the most common trigger named by people with reactive skin.
Sea Water* mineral: Sea Water is filtered and desalinated seawater used in place of plain water. It carries magnesium, calcium and potassium, so it brings the mineral balance of the base closer to skin's own.
Citric Acid pH adjuster: Citric Acid is used in tiny amounts to bring a formula to the pH its actives need, not as an exfoliant at that level. It is an AHA, so at much higher concentrations it can also exfoliate.
Menthol active: Menthol is the cooling compound in mint. It acts on the nerve receptor that also answers to cold, which is why skin feels cool without any change in temperature.
Phenethyl Alcohol preservative booster: Phenethyl Alcohol is an aromatic alcohol with a faint rose scent. It works as a preservative booster and a light solvent, and it is common in formulas built without traditional preservatives.

Dexpanthenol humectant: Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.

Menthyl Lactate active: Menthyl Lactate is a menthol derivative that gives a cooling sensation without menthol's sharpness or scent. It is a sensory ingredient rather than an active.
Sodium Phytate chelator: Sodium Phytate is a rice-derived chelator used in place of EDTA. It ties up trace metals so the formula stays stable and its colour and scent hold.
Hexylene Glycol solvent: Hexylene Glycol is a solvent and light humectant. It keeps ingredients that resist water in solution and thins a formula so it spreads evenly.
Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster: Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
Spirulina Platensis Extract* plant extract: Spirulina is a blue-green microalga, unusually high in protein. Its extract carries amino acids and the blue pigment phycocyanin, which can tint a formula.
Enteromorpha Compressa Extract* plant extract: Green laver, the parae of Korean cooking. Its extract is a mineral-rich, hydrating seaweed ingredient.
Salicornia Herbacea Extract* plant extract: Glasswort, the hamcho that grows on Korean tidal flats. It concentrates sea minerals as it grows, so its extract is used as a mineral-rich hydrating ingredient.
1,2-Hexanediol humectant: 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
Centella Asiatica Extract plant extract: Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
Maltodextrin film former: Maltodextrin is a starch-derived sugar chain used to carry powdered extracts and to form a light film. It also gives a soft, smoothing feel.
Caesalpinia Spinosa Fruit Extract plant extract: Tara fruit extract, from a Peruvian pod. The pod is high in tannins and in the galactomannan sugar sold as tara gum, so the extract also adds a little body.
Gluconolactone exfoliant: Gluconolactone is a PHA, the gentlest exfoliant class. Its molecule is too large to penetrate quickly, so it smooths the surface without the sting of an AHA, and it is a humectant at the same time.
Capryloyl Salicylic Acid exfoliant: Capryloyl Salicylic Acid is salicylic acid with a fatty tail, sometimes sold as LHA. It stays nearer the surface than salicylic acid and works at a higher pH, so it exfoliates more evenly and more gently.
Glycoproteins protein: Glycoproteins are proteins carrying sugar chains, usually supplied by a ferment. They hold water and leave a conditioning film.
Madecassoside active: Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams.
Centella Asiatica Oil plant extract: The oil-soluble fraction of centella, carried in a plant oil. It brings the fat-soluble part of the plant that a water extract leaves behind.
Hydrolyzed Keratin protein: Hydrolyzed Keratin is keratin, the protein hair and nails are built from, cut into fragments small enough to dissolve. In a formula it is a humectant and a smoothing film former.
