Octyldodecanol emollient

Octyldodecanol is a branched fatty alcohol used as an emollient and as a solvent for pigments and mineral powders. It thickens slightly and leaves a soft finish.

Phenyl Trimethicone silicone

Phenyl Trimethicone is a silicone with a higher refractive index than most, so it adds visible gloss as well as slip. It is common in glow and lip textures.

Diisostearyl Malate emollient

Diisostearyl Malate is a thick, glossy ester used to hold pigment in suspension and give a cushioned shine. It is the standard emollient in lip products.

Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate emulsifier

Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate is a water-in-oil emulsifier used in balms and rich creams, and a good pigment disperser.

Ceresin occlusive

Ceresin is a hard mineral wax refined from ozokerite. It stiffens balms and sticks and slows water leaving skin.

Mica colorant

Mica is a mineral ground into fine flakes. It scatters light, so it lightens a shade and gives the soft glow of a tinted or illuminating product.

Silica absorbent

Silica is finely milled mineral, essentially very pure sand. It absorbs oil, stops powders clumping and soft-focuses the look of pores and fine lines.

Polybutene film former

Polybutene is a thick, sticky synthetic liquid polymer. It supplies the tack in a spot patch and the cushioned shine in a lip product.

Phytosteryl/Isostearyl/Cetyl/Stearyl/Behenyl Dimer Dilinoleate emollient

This is a heavy plant-sterol ester used in balms and cleansing oils. It softens skin, holds pigment and gives a thick, cushioned glide.

Synthetic Wax occlusive

Synthetic Wax is a purpose-built hydrocarbon wax used to structure balms and sticks. It is odourless and does not oxidise, unlike most natural waxes.

Dipentaerythrityl Hexahydroxystearate/Hexastearate/Hexarosinate emollient

A thick rosin-bearing ester used in lip products for shine and staying power. It is what makes a gloss cling rather than slide off.

Microcrystalline Wax occlusive

Microcrystalline Wax is a fine-crystalled petroleum wax. It gives balms and sticks body and flexibility and holds oil from separating out.
