Key actives

Hyaluronic Acidhumectant

Hyaluronic Acid is a sugar chain the body already makes, and one gram of it can hold several litres of water. In a formula it is a humectant that pulls water to the surface of skin and holds it in a film, which is what makes skin look plumper while it is there. The name on the box points at it, and it is named eleventh on this serum's own ingredient list.

Adenosineactive

Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated. It is named twenty-ninth on this serum's list, alongside Hyaluronic Acid.

Aspergillus Fermentferment

Aspergillus Ferment is a mould ferment, from the same organism family used to make soy sauce and sake. It supplies amino acids and organic acids and is used as a conditioning ferment. It is named tenth on this serum's list, alongside Hyaluronic Acid.

Alteromonas Ferment Extractferment

A ferment of a marine bacterium, extracted after culture. It supplies an exopolysaccharide that holds water and leaves a smooth film, which is what it is used for. The panel names it seventeenth on this serum's list, beside Hyaluronic Acid.

Tocopherolantioxidant

Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer. The panel names it twenty-eighth on this serum's list, beside Hyaluronic Acid.

How to use

  1. Use it after toner or essence and before moisturizer, AM and/or PM. Smooth a few drops over the face and neck, patting gently until it sinks in before the next step.

How it works

The Black Rice Hyaluronic Anti-wrinkle Serum is a 50ml serum, used after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening. The humectant it is built around is Hyaluronic Acid, named eleventh on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Adenosine, Aspergillus Ferment and Alteromonas Ferment Extract, so the humectant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Hyaluronic Acid stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the serum format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the serum Haruharu sells in Korea, Hyaluronic Acid and all.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this serum on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Hyaluronic Acid on the list.
  • This list names Limonene and Linalool, so skip it if fragrance components are something you avoid.
