Acrylates/Ethylhexyl Acrylate Copolymer film former

An acrylic copolymer that dries to a flexible, water-resistant film. It helps a formula stay put and keeps pigments from moving.

Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Iron Oxides (CI 77499) colorant

Iron Oxides are mineral pigments in red, yellow and black, and the three are blended to make every skin-tone shade in a tinted product. They are inert and sit on the surface.

Glyceryl Stearate SE emulsifier

Glyceryl Stearate SE is the self-emulsifying grade, supplied with a little soap already built in so it can hold an emulsion with less help. It thickens and softens like the plain form.

Glycerin humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

Alcohol Denat solvent

Alcohol Denat. is ethanol with a bitter additive that makes it undrinkable, which is a tax rule rather than a formulation choice. It behaves like alcohol: a fast-evaporating solvent that gives a weightless finish and can feel drying at higher levels.

Stearic Acid fatty acid

Stearic Acid is a saturated fatty acid from plant fats, and one of the three lipid classes skin's own barrier is built from. In a formula it thickens, stabilises the emulsion and can be turned into a soap-style cleanser by adding a base.

VP/Eicosene Copolymer film former

A polymer with one water-loving half and one oil-loving half. It binds pigments into a film that resists water and rubbing.

Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax occlusive

Carnauba wax comes from a Brazilian palm leaf and is the hardest wax in common cosmetic use. A small amount raises the melting point of a stick sharply.

PVP film former

PVP is polyvinylpyrrolidone, a water-soluble polymer that dries into a clear flexible film. It holds pigment or hair in place and washes off with water.

Potassium Hydroxide pH adjuster

Potassium Hydroxide is a strong base used in traces to raise a formula to its target pH. In a soap-style cleanser it also converts fatty acids into the surfactant that does the cleansing.

Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster

Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
