How it works

This is an ampoule, which means a small dose of a thicker, more concentrated liquid rather than a layer you spread everywhere. It goes on in drops rather than in palmfuls, and the surface feels slightly denser afterwards than it does after an essence. Skin holding enough water in its top layer reflects light more evenly and feels supple, and that is the whole of what a hydrating step changes. A toner prepares the surface and a cream closes it, while the ampoule is the part of the routine doing the specific work. The result you can judge yourself is whether your skin still feels comfortable hours after you finish your routine.

Key benefits

  • Birch Juice Moisturizing Ampoule 50ml is Round Lab's serum, sourced for the Korean market rather than reformulated for US shelves.
  • Carries Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice, which is Round Lab's signature birch sap, the brand's own moisture base drawn from Korean white birch trees.
  • Carries Sodium Hyaluronate, which is a salt-form humectant from the hyaluronan family, smaller and faster-absorbing than the parent molecule, and a staple of Korean hydration formulas.
  • Carries Hyaluronic Acid, which is the water-binding polymer most Korean hydration formulas are built around.
  • Ships with the Korean-market barcode and batch code intact, the same box sold on Korean shelves rather than a US repack.
  • Suited to shoppers targeting dehydration and a compromised moisture barrier.

Key actives

Glycerin

Glycerin holds water in the upper surface and is the reason a simple formula can still leave skin feeling supple an hour after it goes on.

Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice

Birch Sap stands in for most of the water in this formula, which is the whole idea of the line: the hydrating base is a plant juice rather than plain water.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is used for immediate surface plumpness, and it works best applied on damp skin with something over it to hold what it gathers.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid holds water at the surface and gives the immediate plump look a hydrating step is judged on, provided a moisturiser follows it.

Beta-Glucan

Beta-Glucan is a sugar from yeast or oats used for a comfortable cushioned surface, and it suits skin that finds most hydrating ingredients too tacky.

How to use

  1. Use it after your toner or essence, when the skin is still slightly damp.
  2. Take two or three drops, press them over the areas that need the work and then over the rest of the face.
  3. Seal it with your moisturiser, since an ampoule on its own leaves the surface a little tacky.
  4. Do not use it in place of your moisturiser, and do not start with a full pipette on skin that has not had it before.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on a small area first if your skin reacts easily to new products.
  • Apply it on damp rather than dry skin, since a hydrating step has more to hold on to that way.
