How it works

Centella Asiatica Extract leads the ingredient panel on this ampoule. Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. On this panel it sits alongside Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate and Biosaccharide Gum-1. Aloe Leaf Extract is mostly water with polysaccharides, amino acids and mild plant acids. It hydrates and leaves a light, cooling film, which is why it is the default after-sun ingredient.

Key actives

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract

Aloe Leaf Extract is mostly water with polysaccharides, amino acids and mild plant acids. It hydrates and leaves a light, cooling film, which is why it is the default after-sun ingredient.

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is a water-soluble salt derived from licorice root. It is the licorice fraction Korean formulas use for the look of redness, and it is far more stable in water than the whole extract.

Biosaccharide Gum-1

Biosaccharide Gum-1 is a fermentation-derived sugar polymer that binds to skin and holds a moisture film in place. It gives a silky, non-tacky feel.

How to use

  1. AM and PM, after toner, as a lightweight hydrating and mattifying step.
  2. Two to three drops, pressed evenly over oily and pore-prone areas like the T-zone.
  3. Let it fully absorb before sunscreen or makeup, since a watery ampoule sets quickly and any residue can cause pilling if rushed.
  4. On drier areas of the face, layer a cream over it rather than skipping moisturizer entirely.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before a first full-face application, as with any new skincare product.
  • Introduce it into a routine one product at a time so any reaction can be traced to the right cause.
