How it works

Centella Asiatica Extract leads the ingredient panel on this ampoule. Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid. On this panel it sits alongside Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid and 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid. Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.

  • Niacinamide on the same panel, the formula's active
  • Tranexamic Acid on the same panel, the formula's active
  • 50 ml to a unit
  • Korean GS1 barcode matched against a Korea sourcing supplier's record for this item

Key actives

Centella Asiatica Extract

Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.

Madecassoside

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.

Tranexamic Acid

Tranexamic Acid is a synthetic amino acid derivative used for the look of stubborn discolouration and post-blemish marks. It is water soluble, stable and comfortable next to niacinamide, which is how it is usually paired.

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid

3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is a stable vitamin C derivative that skin converts to ascorbic acid. It survives in a formula far better than pure vitamin C and works at a gentler pH, so it suits skin that finds the pure acid uncomfortable.

How to use

  1. Use the Tone Brightening Capsule Ampoule after your toner and before your moisturizer, morning and evening.
  2. Three or four drops for the whole face, pressed in with the flats of your fingers while skin is still damp.
  3. Follow with a moisturizer, and with sunscreen in the morning, because an ampoule is a working layer and not the seal.
  4. Twice a day, every day, and give it four weeks before judging it. Do not stack a second brightening step on top in the same layer.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on the inner arm before a first full-face application, as with any new skincare product.
  • Introduce it into a routine one product at a time so any reaction can be traced to the right cause.
