How to use
- Use the Gold Caviar EX Serum after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening.
- Three or four drops covers the whole face. Press it in with flat palms instead of rubbing it around.
- Toner first so the surface is damp, then this, then about a minute before your moisturizer goes over the top.
- Twice a day, every day. Do not stack it with a second serum of the same kind; two hydrating serums in one routine do the work of one.
Does this product contain added fragrance?
Yes. The ingredient list for SKINFOOD Gold Caviar EX Serum 50ml includes Fragrance. That is the label name for an added scent blend, whose individual components are not itemised beyond any allergens the label declares separately. The full list is printed in the Ingredients section of this page.
Are any declarable fragrance allergens listed?
No. None of the 26 fragrance components that EU cosmetic labelling requires to be named individually appear on the ingredient list for SKINFOOD Gold Caviar EX Serum 50ml. They are the components most often reported as contact allergens, which is why that rule names them one by one.
Does this product contain denatured or SD alcohol?
No. The ingredient list for SKINFOOD Gold Caviar EX Serum 50ml names no denatured alcohol, SD alcohol or ethanol. Fatty alcohols such as cetyl and cetearyl alcohol are a different class of ingredient, used as emollients and thickeners, and are not counted here.
Not on the ingredient list below: denatured or SD alcohol, essential oils, parabens, sulfate surfactants and mineral oil or petrolatum.

46 of 49 explained
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Dipropylene Glycol humectant
- Dipropylene Glycol is a glycol used as a solvent and a light humectant. Its main job is keeping the rest of the formula dissolved and the texture fluid rather than adding hydration of its own.
- Cyclohexasiloxane silicone
- Cyclohexasiloxane is a volatile silicone used for a light, fast-spreading feel that leaves nothing behind.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate emollient
- Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate is a light ester emollient that gives a dry, silky finish and disperses pigment evenly.
- Hydrogenated Polyisobutene emollient
- Hydrogenated Polyisobutene is a stabilised synthetic hydrocarbon used in place of mineral oil. It is an emollient that leaves a smooth, cushioned film.
- Glyceryl Stearate Se emulsifier
- Glyceryl Stearate SE is the self-emulsifying grade, supplied with a little soap already built in so it can hold an emulsion with less help. It thickens and softens like the plain form.
- Cetearyl Alcohol fatty alcohol
- Cetearyl Alcohol is a waxy solid, not the drying kind of alcohol. It is a blend of cetyl and stearyl alcohols used to thicken a cream and keep oil and water from separating, and it softens skin as it does so.
- 1,2-Hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- Dipentaerythrityl Hexahydroxystearate/Hexastearate/Hexarosinate emollient
- A thick rosin-bearing ester used in lip products for shine and staying power. It is what makes a gloss cling rather than slide off.
- Cetyl Alcohol fatty alcohol
- Cetyl Alcohol is a waxy fatty alcohol from coconut or palm, unrelated to drying ethanol. It thickens creams, stabilises the emulsion and leaves skin feeling softer.
34 more explained
- Trehalose humectant
- Trehalose is a sugar that some desert plants use to survive drying out. In skincare it is a humectant that holds water in the outer layer and helps a formula feel comfortable rather than tight.
- Behenyl Alcohol fatty alcohol
- Behenyl Alcohol is a long-chain fatty alcohol used to thicken and stabilise a cream. It gives a richer, more velvety body than cetyl alcohol.
- Myristyl Myristate emollient
- A wax ester built from myristic acid and its matching alcohol. It is solid at room temperature and used to give a formula body and a powdery, non-greasy finish.
- Vinyl Dimethicone silicone
- Vinyl Dimethicone is a silicone used as a building block of the crosspolymer gels that give a formula its soft, blurring feel.
- Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer silicone
- This is a silicone elastomer, a soft springy gel. It fills the look of fine texture and gives the velvety, blurred finish of a primer.
- Xanthan Gum thickener
- Xanthan Gum is a polysaccharide made by fermenting sugar. It thickens a watery formula into a gel and holds the whole thing in suspension so nothing separates. Too much of it and a serum turns stringy, which is why it appears in fractions of a percent.
- Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer thickener
- This is the thickener behind most gel-cream textures. It builds a soft, bouncy gel that collapses to a light fluid as it is rubbed in.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer thickener
- This is a synthetic thickener that gels quickly and holds an emulsion stable across a wide pH range. It gives a light, non-tacky body.
- Caviar Extract protein
- Caviar Extract is an extract of sturgeon roe, carrying proteins, amino acids and lipids. It is a fish-derived ingredient.
- Adenosine active
- Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated.
- Hydrogenated Lecithin emulsifier
- Hydrogenated Lecithin is lecithin with its unsaturated bonds filled in, which makes it far more stable. It emulsifies and is the standard shell for the liposomes that carry actives into the outer layer of skin.
- Pentylene Glycol humectant
- Pentylene Glycol hydrates and, like the other longer-chain glycols, makes a formula less hospitable to microbes so the preservative system can be lighter. It also improves how evenly a product spreads.
- Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate emulsifier
- Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate is a sugar-derived emulsifier and solubiliser, mild enough to be a standard choice in Korean essences. It dissolves small amounts of oil into water without any tightening feel.
- Sodium Phytate chelator
- Sodium Phytate is a rice-derived chelator used in place of EDTA. It ties up trace metals so the formula stays stable and its colour and scent hold.
- Linolenic Acid fatty acid
- Linolenic Acid is an omega-3 fatty acid from seed oils. It is an emollient and part of the lipid mix skin uses in its own surface layer.
- Linoleic Acid fatty acid
- Linoleic Acid is an essential omega-6 fatty acid and the main fatty acid in sunflower, safflower and rosehip oil. In a formula it is a lipid that softens and sits in the outer layer.
- Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract plant extract
- Melia Azadirachta is neem. Its leaf and flower extracts are long-standing Ayurvedic ingredients, and Korean formulas use them in products aimed at the look of congested, blemish-prone skin.
- Yeast Extract ferment
- The soluble contents of yeast cells, carrying amino acids, peptides, sugars and B vitamins. It is used as a conditioning ingredient and as a source of beta glucan.
- Sodium Hyaluronate humectant
- Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.
- Sucrose Palmitate emulsifier
- A sugar ester: table sugar joined to a fatty acid. Sugar esters are mild emulsifiers with a light, silky feel and no detergent sting.
- Carthamus Tinctorius (safflower) Seed Oil emollient
- Safflower seed oil, among the highest-linoleic plant oils. High-linoleic oils feel lighter and absorb faster than high-oleic ones.
- Salvia Hispanica Seed Oil emollient
- Chia seed oil, one of the richest plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. It is a light, fast-absorbing oil that softens skin.
- Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate emulsifier
- Polyglyceryl-10 Oleate is a mild sugar-derived emulsifier and solubiliser used where a formula must stay clear.
- Colloidal Gold colorant
- Gold in a formula is metallic gold beaten or milled into flakes so fine they stay suspended. It is inert, sits on the surface, and is there for the visible glint.
- Sorbitan Isostearate emulsifier
- Sorbitan Isostearate is a mild emulsifier that holds water into oil, the direction a cleansing balm or an oil-based cream needs.
- Curcuma Longa (turmeric) Root Extract plant extract
- Turmeric Root Extract carries curcuminoids, well studied plant antioxidants. It is used for the look of dullness and uneven tone, and it tints a formula faintly yellow.
- Beta-Glucan polysaccharide
- Beta-Glucan is a polysaccharide from oats or yeast. It holds a large amount of water, forms a soothing film, and is one of the ingredients formulators reach for in products aimed at reactive skin.
- Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 peptide
- Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 is a six-amino-acid peptide used for the look of expression lines, particularly around the eyes. It is the peptide sold under the name Argireline and is water soluble and stable.
- Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract plant extract
- Ocimum Sanctum is holy basil, or tulsi. Its leaf extract carries plant antioxidants and is used in formulas built for the look of stressed, reactive skin.
- Corallina Officinalis Extract plant extract
- Corallina Officinalis is coral seaweed, which holds calcium and magnesium in its structure. Its extract is used as a mineral-rich conditioning ingredient.
- Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 peptide
- Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 is the five-amino-acid peptide originally sold as Matrixyl. It is used for the look of fine lines and is one of the longest-standing cosmetic peptides.
- Caprylyl Glycol preservative booster
- Caprylyl Glycol is a glycol that conditions skin and, more importantly, strengthens a preservative system so less of the traditional preservative is needed. It appears in most modern formulas built without parabens.
- Fragrance fragrance
- Fragrance, or Parfum, is a single declaration standing for a whole scent blend, which can be dozens of materials. Regulators allow it as a trade secret, so a list showing only this word does not say what the scent is made of. It is the most common trigger named by people with reactive skin.
