How to use
- Use the Recovery Clinic Sensitive Scalp SOS Solution Hair Tonic on a clean, towel-dried scalp, in the evening.
- Shake lightly before use. Spray 2 to 3 times directly onto areas of concern on the scalp, then pat gently to help the tonic absorb. Use on a clean scalp after shampooing or whenever needed.
- It goes on after washing and before anything you style with. Nothing needs to go over it.
- Nightly, or on the evenings you wash. Do not rinse it out; a scalp treatment is a leave-on step.
Does this product contain added fragrance?
Yes. The ingredient list for ViveLab Recovery Clinic Sensitive Scalp SOS Solution Hair Tonic 120ml includes Fragrance. That is the label name for an added scent blend, whose individual components are not itemised beyond any allergens the label declares separately. The full list is printed in the Ingredients section of this page.
Does this product contain essential oils?
Yes. The ingredient list for ViveLab Recovery Clinic Sensitive Scalp SOS Solution Hair Tonic 120ml includes Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil and Mentha Arvensis Leaf Oil. Aromatic plant oils are listed under their botanical name rather than as fragrance, so they are named separately from any fragrance or parfum entry.
Are any declarable fragrance allergens listed?
No. None of the 26 fragrance components that EU cosmetic labelling requires to be named individually appear on the ingredient list for ViveLab Recovery Clinic Sensitive Scalp SOS Solution Hair Tonic 120ml. They are the components most often reported as contact allergens, which is why that rule names them one by one.
Does this product contain denatured or SD alcohol?
Yes. The ingredient list for ViveLab Recovery Clinic Sensitive Scalp SOS Solution Hair Tonic 120ml includes Alcohol. That is the solvent form of alcohol, and it is a different ingredient from the fatty alcohols such as cetyl and cetearyl alcohol that many formulas use as emollients.
Not on the ingredient list below: silicones, parabens, sulfate surfactants, mineral oil or petrolatum and added color.

36 of 40 explained
- Alcohol solvent
- Alcohol here means ethanol. It dissolves ingredients water cannot, evaporates fast so a formula sets quickly and does not feel heavy, and thins texture. In quantity it can leave dry or reactive skin feeling tight, which is why many Korean formulas avoid it and some deliberately use it for a fast, weightless finish.
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Caffeine active
- Caffeine constricts small blood vessels near the surface, which is why eye products use it for the look of puffiness and shadow. It is water soluble and works only while it is on the skin.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- C12-13 Alketh-9 emulsifier
- C12-13 Alketh-9 is a solubiliser used to disperse oil-soluble ingredients evenly in a watery formula.
- Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer thickener
- This is a synthetic thickener that gels quickly and holds an emulsion stable across a wide pH range. It gives a light, non-tacky body.
- Menthol active
- Menthol is the cooling compound in mint. It acts on the nerve receptor that also answers to cold, which is why skin feels cool without any change in temperature.
- Dipropylene Glycol humectant
- Dipropylene Glycol is a glycol used as a solvent and a light humectant. Its main job is keeping the rest of the formula dissolved and the texture fluid rather than adding hydration of its own.
- Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer thickener
- This is a carbomer relative with fatty side chains, so it thickens and stabilises an emulsion at the same time. It gives a light gel-cream body rather than a heavy one.
- Malus Domestica Fruit Cell Culture Extract plant extract
- Apple cells grown in a culture vessel rather than picked from fruit, then extracted. The method gives a consistent extract from a single plant line, and it carries apple polyphenols.
- 1,2-Hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- Fragrance fragrance
- Fragrance, or Parfum, is a single declaration standing for a whole scent blend, which can be dozens of materials. Regulators allow it as a trade secret, so a list showing only this word does not say what the scent is made of. It is the most common trigger named by people with reactive skin.
24 more explained
- Aminomethyl Propanol pH adjuster
- Aminomethyl Propanol is an alkaline base used to raise pH and to neutralise acidic thickeners so they gel.
- Disodium EDTA chelator
- EDTA is a chelator: it locks up trace metal ions from water and packaging that would otherwise turn a formula cloudy, off-colour or rancid. It does nothing to skin and appears at a fraction of a percent.
- Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate active
- Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is a water-soluble salt derived from licorice root. It is the licorice fraction Korean formulas use for the look of redness, and it is far more stable in water than the whole extract.
- Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Extract ferment
- An extract of brewer's yeast, the same organism used to make bread and beer. It supplies amino acids, sugars and beta-glucan and is used as a conditioning ferment.
- Rehmannia Chinensis Root Extract plant extract
- Rehmannia root extract, one of the most used roots in East Asian herbal practice. It carries catalpol and sugars, so it also brings a little water holding character.
- Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil fragrance component
- Rosemary Leaf Oil is an essential oil carrying camphor and cineole. It scents a formula and is a stronger aromatic than most.
- Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil fragrance component
- Tea Tree Leaf Oil is an essential oil from an Australian shrub, carrying terpinen-4-ol. Korean formulas use it in products aimed at blemish-prone skin; it is potent, aromatic, and one of the essential oils most likely to bother reactive skin.
- Cornus Officinalis Fruit Extract plant extract
- Japanese cornel dogwood fruit, the sansuyu of Korean herbal medicine. Its extract carries fruit acids and iridoids and is used as a conditioning extract.
- Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate ferment
- Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate is a yeast ferment filtered clear, the ingredient that made the Korean and Japanese essence category. It carries amino acids, vitamins and organic acids and is used for the look of dullness and rough texture.
- Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Extract plant extract
- Eucalyptus leaf extract, the water-based extract rather than the essential oil. It carries tannins and flavonoids with only a trace of the aroma.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract plant extract
- Paeonia Suffruticosa is tree peony, a long-standing East Asian medicinal plant. Its root extract carries paeoniflorin and is used for the look of reddened skin.
- Dioscorea Japonica Root Extract plant extract
- Dioscorea Japonica is Japanese wild yam, whose root is naturally slippery with mucilage. Its extract hydrates and leaves a cushioned feel.
- Cyclodextrin solvent
- A ring-shaped sugar with a hollow centre. Formulas use it to hold an oil, a fragrance or an unstable active inside the ring, which keeps it stable and slows its release.
- Hydroxyacetophenone preservative booster
- Hydroxyacetophenone is an antioxidant that also strengthens a preservative system, so a formula needs less traditional preservative. Korean formulas pair it with 1,2-hexanediol constantly.
- Hedera Helix (Ivy) Extract plant extract
- Ivy extract with the plant part unstated. Ivy carries saponins, which give it a mild self foaming character, and flavonoids.
- Mentha Arvensis Leaf Oil fragrance
- Cornmint oil, the main commercial source of menthol. It smells and feels close to peppermint.
- Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract plant extract
- Ulmus Davidiana is Japanese elm, whose inner bark yields a naturally slippery mucilage. Korean formulas use the root extract for that cushioned feel and for the look of reactive skin.
- Pueraria Lobata Root Extract plant extract
- Pueraria Lobata is kudzu. Its root extract carries isoflavones, plant compounds structurally similar to oestrogen, and Korean formulas use it for the look of thinning, less resilient skin.
- Pinus Palustris Leaf Extract plant extract
- Pinus Palustris is longleaf pine. Its needle extract carries plant antioxidants and appears in Korean formulas alongside other conifer extracts.
- Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Flower Extract plant extract
- Evening Primrose Flower Extract is used as a conditioning plant extract. The seed oil of the same plant is the better known part, and it is a different ingredient.
- Zea Mays (Corn) Leaf Extract plant extract
- Corn leaf extract. It carries flavonoids and sugars and is used as a conditioning botanical, distinct from the starch and oil taken from the kernel.
- Centella Asiatica Extract plant extract
- Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
- Biotin vitamin
- Biotin is vitamin B7. In skincare it is a conditioning vitamin, most often in hair and scalp formulas.
