Laminaria Japonica Extract plant extract

Laminaria Japonica is kombu kelp. Its extract carries alginates, minerals and iodine, and it is used as a hydrating, mineral-rich ingredient.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride emollient

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is the light fraction of coconut oil, with the heavy parts removed. It is the workhorse emollient of modern formulas: it softens skin, dissolves oil-soluble actives and absorbs without the greasy weight of a whole plant oil.

Gardenia Florida Fruit Extract plant extract

Gardenia Fruit Extract is the traditional East Asian yellow dye plant. In skincare it is used as an antioxidant extract, and it can tint a formula.

Caffeine active

Caffeine constricts small blood vessels near the surface, which is why eye products use it for the look of puffiness and shadow. It is water soluble and works only while it is on the skin.

Chamaecyparis Obtusa Leaf Extract plant extract

Chamaecyparis Obtusa is hinoki cypress. Its leaf extract carries aromatic plant compounds and is used in Korean formulas aimed at oily, congested skin.

Squalane emollient

Squalane is the stable, saturated version of squalene, a lipid human skin already makes. It is a light emollient that absorbs quickly, does not oxidise, and is one of the few oils widely considered safe for blemish-prone skin. Most cosmetic squalane is now from sugarcane or olive rather than shark.

Codium Fragile Extract plant extract

Extract of a green seaweed known as dead man fingers. Like most green algae it carries sulphated polysaccharides and minerals, and it is used as a water holding marine extract.

Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil fragrance component

Sweet Orange Peel Oil is a citrus essential oil carrying limonene. It scents a formula, and limonene is one of the components EU labelling names separately.

Propanediol humectant

Propanediol is a plant-derived glycol used in place of propylene glycol. It hydrates, carries actives into solution, and gives a lighter, less sticky slip than glycerin at the same strength.

Juniperus Virginiana Oil fragrance

Virginian cedarwood oil, a soft woody essential oil. Like every essential oil it carries aromatic terpenes and is a fragrance ingredient.

Litsea Cubeba Fruit Oil fragrance

May chang oil, a bright lemon-scented essential oil pressed from a small Asian tree. Its scent comes mostly from citral, the same aromatic that gives lemongrass its character.

Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil fragrance component

Spearmint leaf oil, an essential oil with a softer, sweeter mint character than peppermint. It scents a formula and gives a cooling feel.
