Korean-market formula

The version sold in Seoul, and what it does and does not have in common with the version on an American shelf. The honest answer is narrower than the internet suggests, and more interesting.

The belief that brings most people to this category is that a Korean brand quietly ships a different, better formula at home and a watered-down one to America. We went looking for documented cases of that across all twelve brands we stock, checking each against its own Korean and US sites and against independent ingredient databases. Outside one category, we did not find them. For cleansers, toners, essences, serums, moisturisers and masks, the published evidence says the Korean-market unit and the export unit are the same product.

The exception is sun care, and it is an exception created by law rather than by marketing. Korea regulates sunscreen as a functional cosmetic; the United States regulates it as an over-the-counter drug and permits only the UV filters on the FDA monograph list. Several filters that are ordinary in Korean formulation are not on that list. A brand that wants to sell sun care in both markets therefore has to build two genuinely different products under one name, and it does.

So what does buying the Korean-market release actually get you? Three things, and none of them is a secret formula. The full Korean range rather than the subset a brand chooses to register here, which is where most of the interesting products live. The Korean release cadence, so a launch reaches you in the year it launches. And a physical unit with its Korean-market barcode and batch code intact, which is the only part of any of this you can check yourself.

We are publishing that even though it argues against the easiest version of our own sales pitch. A store that will not tell you when the difference is small is a store you cannot trust on the cases where it is large.
