How to prove the bottle in your hand came from Seoul

There is no single way to verify Korean skincare, and any site that gives you one universal instruction is guessing. Verification is set by each brand individually, and the brands do not agree. COSRX runs its own verification portal. Medicube prints a QR code on the inner box. Anua uses a holographic seal that only the HiddenTag app can read. Beauty of Joseon has retired code verification altogether, so for that brand the honest answer is the sourcing chain rather than a scan. For most of the brands we carry, nobody has published a route at all. Here is each case, what it proves, and what to do when there is nothing to scan.

Is there one way to check whether Korean skincare is authentic?

No, and the belief that there is causes most of the bad advice in this category. Authentication is a brand-level programme, not an industry standard. A brand chooses whether to run one, chooses the mechanism, pays for it, and can retire it without telling anyone. Two brands sitting next to each other on the same Olive Young shelf can have completely different answers, and one of them can have no answer.

What is universal is the physical evidence on the box, and it is worth doing first because it costs nothing and catches the crudest problems. Every unit carries a manufacturer-printed barcode identifying the product for a specific market, and a production code identifying your specific unit. The production code is normally repeated on the inner unit as well as the outer box, and the two should agree. How do I verify each brand? The brand-by-brand table

These are the routes on record as of our last check, 15 August 2026. We date it because brand verification policy is fragmenting quickly and a stale instruction is as bad as a wrong one.

Eight rows say "not checked", and we are printing that rather than hiding it. "Not checked" means nobody on our side has confirmed that brand's current policy, so we make no claim about it. It does not mean the brand has no programme, and it emphatically does not mean the product is suspect. An empty cell is information. A cell filled in with a plausible guess is a liability, and in this category plausible guesses spread fast.

How do I verify a COSRX product?

COSRX verifies units itself, which makes it the easiest brand in our catalogue to check and the one where the check means the most. Find the verification page on cosrx.com, then enter the batch number and expiration date printed on your unit. Read both off the package rather than from a seller's listing. That is the entire point of the exercise: the numbers you enter come from the physical object in your hand, so the answer is about your object and not about somebody's inventory record.

How do I verify a Medicube product?

Medicube prints a QR code on the inner box. Scan it with an ordinary phone camera, no app required, and it resolves to the brand's own verification site at medicubeverify.com.

The detail that catches people out is "inner box". If a seller has discarded the outer carton, or if you are buying a loose unit, you may not have the thing that carries the code. That is a good reason to insist on receiving a product boxed, and a good reason to be wary of any Korean skincare sold without its packaging. How do I verify an Anua product?

Anua uses a holographic seal read by HiddenTag, a third-party authentication app used across a number of Korean consumer categories. Install HiddenTag from your phone's app store, then scan the seal on the box. A regular camera app will not resolve it and neither will a generic QR reader, which is exactly why people conclude the seal is fake when it is not. If nothing happens when you point your camera at it, you are using the wrong tool, not holding a counterfeit.

What about Beauty of Joseon, which has no verification code?

This is the most useful section in the article, because it is the case that generic advice handles worst.

Beauty of Joseon has retired its QR scan and is phasing out its authenticity seal. There is no code to enter and no app to install. Any site that tells you to scan a Beauty of Joseon code is repeating an instruction that has expired, and any site that tells you to check a Beauty of Joseon batch code through a third-party decoder is worse, because at least one widely recommended decoder explicitly does not support this brand.

So the honest answer for Beauty of Joseon is the one nobody wants to give, because it puts the burden on the seller instead of on a gadget: verification is by sourcing chain. Who bought it, from whom, and can they say so. The physical evidence that remains is the intact Korean-market barcode, the production code agreeing between box and unit, and Korean-primary packaging. That is what we can show you.

It matters most for sun care, which is 23 of the 52 Beauty of Joseon units we carry, and the one category where the same family name really does cover more than one formula. In that situation, reading the filter list is a better authentication test than any seal would be.

What do I do for a brand with no published route?

Do the check that is true regardless of brand policy: match the batch code on the box against the code printed on the bottle or tube itself. The two are stamped separately during manufacture and they should agree. A mismatch is a real signal. An agreement is not proof of authenticity on its own, but it does rule out the most common repackaging failure, and it costs you thirty seconds.

Then look at the packaging as a document rather than as decoration. A Korean-market unit is Korean-primary: the mandatory text on the box is Korean, because that is what Korean law requires, and an English over-label applied for US import sits on top of it rather than replacing it. A unit whose box is English-primary with no Korean underneath was not built for the Korean market, whatever the product name says.

Which verification tools will you not send me to, and why?

Two, specifically, and we will name the reasons.

• CheckFresh. A batch-code decoder that many guides recommend as a universal answer. It explicitly does not support Beauty of Joseon, which happens to be one of the brands people most want to check. Sending you to a tool that will return nothing for your product is worse than sending you nowhere, because a blank result reads as a failed verification.
• checkcosmetic.net. Its own copy warns that its results can be incorrect and that some of its data is consultant-sourced. We are not going to build a trust claim on a tool that declines to make one about itself.

The underlying rule we hold ourselves to: never name a verification tool that does not support the brand in front of you, and never invent a verification URL. Where a brand publishes a route, we say what it is. Where it does not, we say that instead.

What does a verification result actually prove?

Less than people assume, and it is worth being precise about it.

A brand portal check on a batch number confirms that the number is one the manufacturer issued, and usually when. It confirms the code, not your bottle: a code can be photographed and reprinted. A QR or holographic seal is harder to copy and therefore stronger, which is why the brands that care most use one. None of these tell you how the unit was stored, how old it is now, or whether the product inside was decanted.

Which is why we treat verification as one input among several rather than as a certificate. The others are: a barcode rather than a name, because names get recycled across markets; the ingredient list, which for sun care is decisive; the production code; and who sold it to you and what they will tell you about where it came from.
