How it works

The Pore Cleansing Oil is a 200ml cleansing oil, used as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin and dry hands, before any water reaches the face. The exfoliant it is built around is Gluconolactone, named fifteenth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Tocopherol, Houttuynia Cordata Extract and Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extract, so the exfoliant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Gluconolactone stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the cleansing oil format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the cleansing oil Abib sells in Korea, Gluconolactone and all.

Key benefits

  • Gluconolactone, the exfoliant this cleansing oil is built around
  • Tocopherol on the same list, an antioxidant
  • Houttuynia Cordata Extract, Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extract and Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract on the same list, plant extracts
  • Cetyl Ethylhexanoate and Triethylhexanoin further down the same list
  • Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil and Isopropyl Palmitate further down the same list
  • Gluconolactone named fifteenth on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Gluconolactoneexfoliant

Gluconolactone is a PHA, the gentlest exfoliant class. On this cleansing oil's own ingredient list it is named fifteenth.

Tocopherolantioxidant

Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer. The panel names it twenty-seventh on this cleansing oil's list, beside Gluconolactone.

Houttuynia Cordata Extractplant extract

Houttuynia Cordata is heartleaf, and it is one of the two or three anchor plants of Korean calming skincare. Its extract carries quercitrin and other flavonoids and is used for the look of redness and blemish-prone skin. It is named ninth on this cleansing oil's list, alongside Gluconolactone.

Castanea Crenata (Chestnut) Shell Extractplant extract

Chestnut Shell Extract carries tannins and is used as an antioxidant plant extract, most often in formulas aimed at visible pores. The panel names it sixteenth on this cleansing oil's list, beside Gluconolactone.

Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extractplant extract

Lavender Flower Extract is the water-based extract rather than the essential oil, so it is much milder and less aromatic. It is named seventeenth on this cleansing oil's list, alongside Gluconolactone.

How to use

  1. Start on dry skin with dry hands, since water on the face first stops the oil doing its job.
  2. Massage for about a minute, working over the nose, jaw and hairline where sunscreen collects.
  3. Wet your fingers and keep massaging until the oil turns milky, then rinse it fully away.
  4. Do not stop at the oil, because a second wash with your usual cleanser is what removes the rest of the day.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this cleansing oil on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Gluconolactone on the list.
  • Gluconolactone on this list makes this cleansing oil an exfoliating step, so do not stack it with another one on the same night.

  • This means that gluconolactone acts as an exfoliating acid, but also as a moisturizer. It has moisturizing, soothing, and lightening properties, working well on dry skin.
