How it works

The Azelaic Acid 10 Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum is a 30ml serum, used after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening. The active it is built around is Azelaic Acid, named second on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Allantoin, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate and Niacinamide, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Azelaic Acid stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the serum format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the serum Anua sells in Korea, Azelaic Acid and all.

Key benefits

  • Azelaic Acid, the active this serum is built around
  • Allantoin, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Niacinamide and Madecassoside on the same list, actives
  • Asiaticoside and Asiatic Acid further down the same list
  • Madecassic Acid and Ceramide NP further down the same list
  • Azelaic Acid named second on the manufacturer list printed on this page
  • The Korean-market release of this serum, confirmed against its Korean barcode

Key actives

Azelaic Acidactive

Azelaic Acid is a grain-derived acid used for the look of redness and uneven tone. The name on the box points at it, and it is named second on this serum's own ingredient list.

Allantoinactive

Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin. The panel names it thirteenth on this serum's list, beside Azelaic Acid.

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizateactive

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate is a water-soluble salt derived from licorice root. It is named fourteenth on this serum's list, alongside Azelaic Acid.

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is named nineteenth on this serum's list, alongside Azelaic Acid.

Madecassosideactive

Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams. It is named twenty-fifth on this serum's list, alongside Azelaic Acid.

How to use

  1. Apply it at night after your toner, while the skin is still slightly damp, so it spreads with less product.
  2. Use a few drops over the whole face rather than dabbing only on the uneven spots, since edges are what show.
  3. Follow with a moisturiser, because a serum that dries down matte still needs something over it.
  4. Do not stack it with a strong exfoliating acid on the same night, and alternate nights instead.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this serum on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Azelaic Acid on the list.
  • Introduce this serum on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Azelaic Acid rather than to three changes at once.
