Key actives

Mentholactive

Menthol is the cooling compound in mint. It acts on the nerve receptor that also answers to cold, which is why skin feels cool without any change in temperature. On this toner's own ingredient list it is named eighth.

Methyl Diisopropyl Propionamideactive

A synthetic cooling agent that gives the cool feeling of menthol without the mint smell. It is used where a formula wants the sensation but not the scent. The panel names it twelfth on this toner's list, beside Menthol.

Caffeineactive

Caffeine constricts small blood vessels near the surface, which is why eye products use it for the look of puffiness and shadow. It is water soluble and works only while it is on the skin. The panel names it thirteenth on this toner's list, beside Menthol.

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is named fourteenth on this toner's list, alongside Menthol.

Asiaticosideactive

Asiaticoside is one of the four active triterpenes isolated from centella and the most studied of them. Korean formulas name it separately when they want to show which fraction of the plant they standardised. The panel names it thirty-third on this toner's list, beside Menthol.

How to use

  1. Apply directly to the scalp after shampooing, section by section, and massage in; leave in rather than rinsing.

How it works

The Intensive Booster Scalp Tonic is a 105ml toner, used straight after cleansing, morning and evening, while the face is still damp. The active it is built around is Menthol, named eighth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Methyl Diisopropyl Propionamide, Caffeine and Niacinamide, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Menthol stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the toner format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the toner APLB sells in Korea, Menthol and all.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this toner on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Menthol on the list.
  • Introduce this toner on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Menthol rather than to three changes at once.
