How it works

The Red Smoothie Serum 30 is a 50g serum, used after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening. The active it is built around is Niacinamide, named third on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Arbutin, Adenosine and Hydrolyzed DNA, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Niacinamide stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the serum format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the serum Arencia sells in Korea, Niacinamide and all.

Key benefits

  • Niacinamide, the active this serum is built around
  • Arbutin, Adenosine and Hydrolyzed DNA on the same list, actives
  • Hexapeptide-2 on the same list, a peptide
  • Biotin and Pyridoxine further down the same list
  • Rice Ferment Filtrate and Ferulic Acid further down the same list
  • Niacinamide named third on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. On this serum's own ingredient list it is named third.

Arbutinactive

Arbutin is the naturally occurring form of the same compound, from bearberry and related plants, used for the look of uneven tone. The alpha isomer is the more stable of the two. It is named fourth on this serum's list, alongside Niacinamide.

Adenosineactive

Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated. The panel names it fifteenth on this serum's list, beside Niacinamide.

Hydrolyzed DNAactive

Hydrolyzed DNA is DNA cut into short fragments so it dissolves and spreads. It is the same ingredient family as sodium DNA and polydeoxyribonucleotide, the one Korean formulas market as PDRN. It is named thirty-fifth on this serum's list, alongside Niacinamide.

Hexapeptide-2peptide

Hexapeptide-2 is a six-amino-acid peptide used for the look of even tone rather than of lines, which puts it in the smaller group of peptides aimed at pigment. It is named thirty-third on this serum's list, alongside Niacinamide.

How to use

  1. Use the Red Smoothie Serum 30 after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening.
  2. Three or four drops covers the whole face. Press it in with flat palms instead of rubbing it around.
  3. Toner first so the surface is damp, then this, then about a minute before your moisturizer goes over the top.
  4. Twice a day, every day. Do not stack it with a second serum of the same kind; two hydrating serums in one routine do the work of one.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this serum on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Niacinamide on the list.
  • Introduce this serum on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Niacinamide rather than to three changes at once.
