Aqua (Water) solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Glycerin humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

Lauryl Glucoside surfactant

A sugar surfactant made from glucose and a fatty alcohol. Glucosides carry no charge, which is what makes them mild, and they give a soft low foam.

Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate surfactant

An amino acid surfactant made from coconut fatty acids and glutamic acid. It cleanses at a mildly acidic pH and is among the gentler foaming surfactants.

Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract plant extract

Willow Bark Extract carries salicin, the plant compound salicylic acid is related to. The two are not interchangeable: willow bark is a mild clarifying extract, not a BHA exfoliant at the levels used in cosmetics.

Laminaria Digitata Extract plant extract

Oarweed kelp extract. It carries alginates, minerals and iodine and is used as a hydrating, mineral-rich marine ingredient.

Diospyros Kaki Leaf Extract plant extract

Diospyros Kaki is the persimmon tree. Its leaf extract carries tannins and vitamin C and is used as an antioxidant extract.

Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate ferment

Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate is the ferment with the bacterial cells broken open, so their contents are in the formula too. It is a conditioning ferment used in barrier-focused products.

Polyglutamic Acid humectant

Polyglutamic Acid comes from fermented soy and holds several times more water than hyaluronic acid for its weight. It forms a light film on the surface, so it is often layered with hyaluronic rather than replacing it.

Althaea Rosea Root Extract plant extract

Hollyhock root extract. Like the flower it is rich in mucilage, so it hydrates and leaves a slippery, cushioned feel.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract plant extract

Aloe Leaf Extract is mostly water with polysaccharides, amino acids and mild plant acids. It hydrates and leaves a light, cooling film, which is why it is the default after-sun ingredient.

Taraxacum Officinale (Dandelion) Leaf Extract plant extract

Dandelion leaf extract, carrying flavonoids, minerals and plant acids. It is used as a conditioning antioxidant extract.
