Isododecane solvent

Isododecane is a light, volatile hydrocarbon. It carries pigments and film formers on smoothly and then evaporates, leaving the film behind and nothing oily.

Cyclopentasiloxane silicone

Cyclopentasiloxane is a volatile silicone: it spreads a formula thin and smooth then evaporates, leaving no residue. It is the silicone behind a dry, powdery primer finish.

Trimethylsiloxysilicate silicone

A silicone resin supplied in a volatile carrier. The carrier flashes off and the resin stays behind as a light, transfer-resistant film.

Microcrystalline Wax occlusive

Microcrystalline Wax is a fine-crystalled petroleum wax. It gives balms and sticks body and flexibility and holds oil from separating out.

Hydrogenated Polyisobutene emollient

Hydrogenated Polyisobutene is a stabilised synthetic hydrocarbon used in place of mineral oil. It is an emollient that leaves a smooth, cushioned film.

Vp/Eicosene Copolymer film former

A polymer with one water-loving half and one oil-loving half. It binds pigments into a film that resists water and rubbing.

Silica Dimethyl Silylate absorbent

Silica Dimethyl Silylate is silica with a silicone surface coating. It absorbs oil, thickens and stops powders clumping.

Silica absorbent

Silica is finely milled mineral, essentially very pure sand. It absorbs oil, stops powders clumping and soft-focuses the look of pores and fine lines.

Disteardimonium Hectorite thickener

Disteardimonium Hectorite is a modified clay used to thicken the oil phase and stop pigments settling to the bottom of the bottle.

Trihydroxystearin thickener

A castor-derived wax used to thicken oils and stop pigments settling. It builds structure in an anhydrous formula without making it hard.

Cellulose absorbent

Cellulose is plant fibre. In a formula it thickens, absorbs oil and, in a sheet mask, is often the fabric itself.

Propylene Carbonate solvent

A polar solvent used mainly with clays: it swells montmorillonite and hectorite so they thicken an oil phase. It also thins heavy pigment pastes.
