How it works

A clay mask works by absorbing: it holds surface oil and debris while it sits, and takes them off when it is rinsed. This one carries kaolin, silica and diatomaceous earth as the absorbing side, with charcoal powder and calamine on the same list. It goes on after cleansing, on dry skin, and the rest of the routine waits until it has come off. Skin that looks shiny and congested across the nose and chin is the case it fits, and using it on those areas alone is a fair way to go. Once or twice a week, with a full hydrating routine straight afterwards.

Key benefits

  • Kaolin sits fourth on the list with silica and diatomaceous earth for sebum
  • Calamine gives the pink shade and its classic soothing feel
  • Charcoal capsules burst as you massage, deepening the cleanse
  • Salicylic acid finishes the clarifying story

How to use

  1. Use the Poreless Clarifying Charcoal Mask after cleansing, on dry skin, in the evening.
  2. Spread an even layer over the face, or over the congested areas alone, and massage lightly as it settles.
  3. Rinse it off once the color has lightened, then follow with toner, serum and moisturizer the same evening.
  4. Once or twice a week. Do not let it dry to a crack; a clay mask taken past that point leaves skin tight rather than clean.

Worth knowing

  • This formula carries an active acid, so pairing it with another exfoliant in the same routine is worth spacing out.
