Collagen at 243 Daltons and the Mask That Dissolves

The collagen in a collagen mask is not replacing the collagen in your skin, and the good ones are not pretending to. What is the 243 dalton claim about?

Biodance publishes a molecular weight for the collagen in its Bio-Collagen line: an ultra-low-molecular-weight collagen at 243 daltons, alongside an oligo-hyaluronic acid. That is the brand's own figure and we quote it as theirs, because the ingredient list itself declares "Collagen Extract" without a number and we will not print a figure as ours that we cannot read off the box.

Taking the figure at face value, what does 243 daltons mean? Native collagen is a triple helix in the region of 300,000 daltons. A fragment at 243 daltons is not collagen in any structural sense. It is a peptide of two or three amino acids. That is not a criticism. Small fragments are exactly what can move through a hydrated stratum corneum, and short peptide fragments are the size class that cosmetic science has actually shown to be biologically interesting. But it does mean the honest description of the ingredient is "a very small collagen-derived peptide", not "collagen", and the marketing shorthand runs the two together.

Carob gum, carrageenan (chondrus crispus), algin and agar are the four gelling agents. Potassium chloride is the ion that sets the carrageenan. Acrylates copolymer gives the sheet its stretch and tack. That combination is not a fabric carrier soaked in essence. It is a cast gel that is itself the essence, which is why a 34 gram sheet holds so much more water than a 20 millilitre cotton mask and why it clings without sliding off. As the water leaves over two hours the gel thins and goes clear. The famous transparency is the mask running out of water, not the mask "absorbing into skin".

What comes with the gel is a decent supporting cast: niacinamide fourth, then galactomyces ferment filtrate, adenosine, hydrolysed hyaluronic acid, allantoin, dipotassium glycyrrhizate, and a three-ferment probiotic run of lactobacillus ferment, bifida ferment filtrate and lactobacillus ferment lysate. Rose damascena flower water, pear, melon and iris root round it out. Tocopherol closes.
