Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate surfactant

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a coconut-derived surfactant that gives a dense, creamy foam while staying mild. It is the usual choice in syndet cleansing bars.

Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil emollient

Olive Fruit Oil is high in oleic acid and plant sterols. It is a rich emollient that suits dry skin and is heavy enough that blemish-prone skin often does not get on with it.

Glycerin humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

Xanthan Gum thickener

Xanthan Gum is a polysaccharide made by fermenting sugar. It thickens a watery formula into a gel and holds the whole thing in suspension so nothing separates. Too much of it and a serum turns stringy, which is why it appears in fractions of a percent.

Zea Mays (Corn) Starch absorbent

Corn Starch absorbs oil and moisture and gives a soft, matte finish. It also thickens a formula.

Coco-Betaine surfactant

Coco-Betaine is a coconut-derived secondary surfactant used to build foam and make a cleanser milder.

Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil emollient

Coconut Oil is high in lauric acid, which makes it a rich emollient and partial occlusive. It is well known to be poorly suited to blemish-prone skin.

Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel Oil fragrance component

Grapefruit peel oil, an essential oil pressed from the rind. It scents a formula, and citrus peel oils can make skin more sensitive to sun.

Citric Acid pH adjuster

Citric Acid is used in tiny amounts to bring a formula to the pH its actives need, not as an exfoliant at that level. It is an AHA, so at much higher concentrations it can also exfoliate.

Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil emollient

Argan Oil is pressed from the argan kernel and is rich in oleic and linoleic acids plus vitamin E. It is a medium-weight emollient that absorbs reasonably fast.

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil emollient

Castor Oil is thick, glossy and unusually good at dissolving pigment, which is why it dominates lip and cleansing-balm formulas. It is a heavy emollient.
