How to use
- Use the Scalp Solution Shampoo Extreme Cooling in place of your usual shampoo, on hair wet all the way through.
- Apply an appropriate amount to wet scalp and hair, lather, and gently massage. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Rinse thoroughly, then follow with your usual conditioner or treatment through the mid-lengths and ends.
- As often as you already wash. Do not pile it straight onto dry hair; a shampoo needs water in the hair to spread at all.
Does this product contain added fragrance?
No. Neither fragrance nor parfum appears on the ingredient list for Dr.Groot Scalp Solution Shampoo Extreme Cooling 700ml. Those are the two names a cosmetic label uses for an added scent blend, so a formula carrying one would name it. The full list is printed in the Ingredients section of this page.
Does this product contain essential oils?
Yes. The ingredient list for Dr.Groot Scalp Solution Shampoo Extreme Cooling 700ml includes Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Mentha Arvensis Leaf Oil, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil and Juniperus Mexicana Oil. Aromatic plant oils are listed under their botanical name rather than as fragrance, so they are named separately from any fragrance or parfum entry.
Are any declarable fragrance allergens listed?
No. None of the 26 fragrance components that EU cosmetic labelling requires to be named individually appear on the ingredient list for Dr.Groot Scalp Solution Shampoo Extreme Cooling 700ml. They are the components most often reported as contact allergens, which is why that rule names them one by one.
Does this product contain denatured or SD alcohol?
Yes. The ingredient list for Dr.Groot Scalp Solution Shampoo Extreme Cooling 700ml includes Ethanol. That is the solvent form of alcohol, and it is a different ingredient from the fatty alcohols such as cetyl and cetearyl alcohol that many formulas use as emollients.
Not on the ingredient list below: fragrance or parfum, silicones, parabens, sulfate surfactants, mineral oil or petrolatum and added color.

83 of 95 explained
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate surfactant
- A sulfosuccinate surfactant: milder than a sulfate, with more foam than an amino-acid one. It is often used to soften a sulfate-based cleanser.
- Lauryl Hydroxysultaine surfactant
- Lauryl Hydroxysultaine is a mild secondary surfactant that keeps foaming even in hard water and at low pH.
- Cocamide Methyl MEA surfactant
- A coconut derived amide used as a foam booster and thickener in cleansers. It builds a denser lather and adds body to a surfactant blend.
- Sodium Chloride thickener
- Sodium Chloride is salt. In a cleanser it thickens the liquid; in a mask or essence it balances the mineral content of the water phase. It has no active role.
- Menthol active
- Menthol is the cooling compound in mint. It acts on the nerve receptor that also answers to cold, which is why skin feels cool without any change in temperature.
- Glacial Water plant extract
- Glacial Water is meltwater collected from glacier ice, used in place of ordinary water as a formula base. It is water with its own mineral profile rather than an active.
- Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil fragrance
- Peppermint essential oil. Its menthol content is what produces the cool feeling, and it is a commonly declared fragrance material.
- Mentha Arvensis Leaf Oil fragrance
- Cornmint oil, the main commercial source of menthol. It smells and feels close to peppermint.
- Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Extract plant extract
- Sesame seed extract. It carries sesamol and sterols and is used as a conditioning, antioxidant-rich extract.
- Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract plant extract
- Soybean Seed Extract carries isoflavones, plant sterols and soy proteins. It is used as a conditioning antioxidant extract.
- Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract plant extract
- Rice bran extract, from the outer layer milled off white rice. Bran is the richest part of the grain, carrying ferulic acid, vitamin E and phytic acid.
71 more explained
- Panthenol humectant
- Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate surfactant
- Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate is a coconut-derived surfactant that gives a dense, creamy foam while staying mild. It is the usual choice in syndet cleansing bars.
- Coco-Glucoside surfactant
- Coco-Glucoside is a mild sugar-derived surfactant used in gentle cleansers, usually with a second surfactant to build foam.
- Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate surfactant
- Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate is a coconut-and-glycine surfactant used in low-pH cleansers. It foams well and rinses without the squeaky tightness a soap leaves.
- Glyceryl Oleate emulsifier
- Glycerin joined to oleic acid. It emulsifies, softens skin, and is often what makes a cleansing oil rinse away instead of leaving a film.
- Tetrasodium EDTA chelator
- EDTA is a chelator: it locks up trace metal ions from water and packaging that would otherwise turn a formula cloudy, off-colour or rancid. It does nothing to skin and appears at a fraction of a percent.
- Citric Acid pH adjuster
- Citric Acid is used in tiny amounts to bring a formula to the pH its actives need, not as an exfoliant at that level. It is an AHA, so at much higher concentrations it can also exfoliate.
- Polyquaternium-7 film former
- Polyquaternium-7 is a positively charged polymer, so it clings to hair and skin, which carry a slight negative charge. It conditions and reduces static.
- Caprylyl Glycol preservative booster
- Caprylyl Glycol is a glycol that conditions skin and, more importantly, strengthens a preservative system so less of the traditional preservative is needed. It appears in most modern formulas built without parabens.
- PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil emulsifier
- PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is the most used solubiliser in clear toners and micellar waters. It holds small amounts of oil and fragrance in solution without turning the formula cloudy.
- Salicylic Acid exfoliant
- Salicylic Acid is a BHA, and the only common exfoliant that is oil soluble, so it can work inside a pore rather than only on the surface. It loosens the dead cells that block pores and is used for the look of congested, oily skin.
- PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate thickener
- A polymer thickener used to give body to cleansers and shower products without clouding them.
- Niacinamide active
- Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.
- PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Cocamide humectant
- A coconut-derived humectant and mild conditioner. It holds water and leaves skin feeling soft after a cleanser.
- Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil fragrance component
- Rosemary Leaf Oil is an essential oil carrying camphor and cineole. It scents a formula and is a stronger aromatic than most.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- Juniperus Mexicana Oil fragrance
- Texas cedarwood oil, used for a dry woody note. It is an aromatic ingredient rather than a functional one.
- Aminomethyl Propanol pH adjuster
- Aminomethyl Propanol is an alkaline base used to raise pH and to neutralise acidic thickeners so they gel.
- Hexylene Glycol solvent
- Hexylene Glycol is a solvent and light humectant. It keeps ingredients that resist water in solution and thins a formula so it spreads evenly.
- Sea Salt mineral
- Sea Salt is the mineral residue of evaporated seawater: mostly sodium chloride with magnesium, calcium and potassium. It is used as a mild abrasive in scrubs and to adjust how thick a cleanser is.
- Lactococcus Ferment Lysate ferment
- Lactococcus Ferment Lysate is a lactic-culture ferment with the bacterial cells broken open, so their contents are in the formula too. It is used as a conditioning ferment in barrier-focused products.
- Inulin polysaccharide
- Inulin is a plant fructan, most often from chicory root. It holds water and, in a formula, feeds the beneficial bacteria on the surface.
- Ethanol solvent
- Alcohol here means ethanol. It dissolves ingredients water cannot, evaporates fast so a formula sets quickly and does not feel heavy, and thins texture. In quantity it can leave dry or reactive skin feeling tight, which is why many Korean formulas avoid it and some deliberately use it for a fast, weightless finish.
- Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Extract plant extract
- Eucalyptus leaf extract, the water-based extract rather than the essential oil. It carries tannins and flavonoids with only a trace of the aroma.
- Houttuynia Cordata Extract plant extract
- Houttuynia Cordata is heartleaf, and it is one of the two or three anchor plants of Korean calming skincare. Its extract carries quercitrin and other flavonoids and is used for the look of redness and blemish-prone skin.
- Biotin vitamin
- Biotin is vitamin B7. In skincare it is a conditioning vitamin, most often in hair and scalp formulas.
- Caffeine active
- Caffeine constricts small blood vessels near the surface, which is why eye products use it for the look of puffiness and shadow. It is water soluble and works only while it is on the skin.
- Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract plant extract
- Paeonia Suffruticosa is tree peony, a long-standing East Asian medicinal plant. Its root extract carries paeoniflorin and is used for the look of reddened skin.
- Dioscorea Japonica Root Extract plant extract
- Dioscorea Japonica is Japanese wild yam, whose root is naturally slippery with mucilage. Its extract hydrates and leaves a cushioned feel.
- Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract plant extract
- Licorice Root Extract carries glabridin and liquiritin. It is one of the classic plant ingredients used for the look of uneven tone and redness, and it appears in almost every brightening formula that avoids synthetic actives.
- Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract plant extract
- Rosemary Leaf Extract carries rosmarinic and carnosic acids, both effective antioxidants. It is often there to keep the oils in a formula from going rancid.
- Mentha Arvensis Leaf Extract plant extract
- Field mint leaf extract, the plant most menthol is distilled from. The extract is far gentler than the oil and carries a light cooling character.
- Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract plant extract
- Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
- Panax Ginseng Root Extract plant extract
- Ginseng Root Extract is the signature ingredient of Korean traditional skincare, carrying ginsenosides. It is used for the look of tired, dull skin, and brands often ferment it to break the ginsenosides into smaller forms.
- Polygonum Multiflorum Root Extract plant extract
- Fo-ti root extract, a long-standing East Asian herbal ingredient. It is used as a conditioning extract, most often in scalp and hair formulas.
- Cinnamomum Cassia Bark Extract plant extract
- Cassia cinnamon bark extract, a traditional herbal ingredient carrying cinnamaldehyde and tannins. It is used in warming, antioxidant-rich blends.
- Paeonia Lactiflora Root Extract plant extract
- Chinese peony root, one of the oldest ingredients in East Asian herbal practice. Its extract carries paeoniflorin and is used for the look of reddened, uneven skin.
- Yeast Extract ferment
- The soluble contents of yeast cells, carrying amino acids, peptides, sugars and B vitamins. It is used as a conditioning ingredient and as a source of beta glucan.
- Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract plant extract
- Scutellaria Baicalensis is Chinese skullcap. Its root extract carries baicalin, a well studied plant antioxidant, and it is used for the look of redness.
- Mentha Rotundifolia Leaf Extract plant extract
- Apple mint leaf extract, a softer-scented mint than peppermint. It is used as a conditioning extract with a faint cooling character.
- Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract plant extract
- Ginger root extract. It carries gingerols, gives a warming sensory character, and is used as an antioxidant-rich herbal extract.
- Ziziphus Jujuba Fruit Extract plant extract
- Jujube fruit extract, the daechu of Korean tea and cooking. It carries sugars, fruit acids and polysaccharides and is used as a hydrating extract.
- Glycine amino acid
- Glycine is the smallest amino acid and one of the free amino acids skin holds to keep water in the outer layer. In a formula it is a humectant and a mild buffer.
- Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract plant extract
- Tea tree extract taken from the whole plant above ground, rather than the distilled oil. It is much gentler than the oil and is used for the look of congested skin.
- Angelica Gigas Root Extract plant extract
- Korean angelica root, a staple of Korean herbal medicine. Its extract carries coumarins and is used as a conditioning herbal extract.
- Serine amino acid
- Serine is one of the most abundant free amino acids in the outer layer of skin, where it helps hold water. Added to a formula it is a humectant.
- Glutamic Acid amino acid
- Glutamic Acid is an amino acid used as a humectant and a mild pH adjuster. It is one of the components of skin's natural moisturising factor.
- Hyaluronic Acid humectant
- Hyaluronic Acid is a sugar chain the body already makes, and one gram of it can hold several litres of water. In a formula it is a humectant that pulls water to the surface of skin and holds it in a film, which is what makes skin look plumper while it is there.
- Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Extract ferment
- An extract of brewer's yeast, the same organism used to make bread and beer. It supplies amino acids, sugars and beta-glucan and is used as a conditioning ferment.
- Lactic Acid exfoliant
- Lactic Acid is a larger AHA than glycolic, so it works nearer the surface and is easier on skin, and it is a humectant as well as an exfoliant. It is the AHA of choice for dry skin.
- Aspartic Acid amino acid
- Aspartic Acid is an amino acid used as a humectant and buffer, usually within a wider amino acid blend.
- Leucine amino acid
- Leucine is an essential amino acid used as a humectant, part of the amino acid block many Korean essences carry.
- Alanine amino acid
- Alanine is a free amino acid skin uses as part of its own moisture-holding system. In a formula it hydrates and conditions.
- Lysine amino acid
- Lysine is an essential amino acid used as a conditioning humectant in an amino acid complex.
- Beta-Glucan polysaccharide
- Beta-Glucan is a polysaccharide from oats or yeast. It holds a large amount of water, forms a soothing film, and is one of the ingredients formulators reach for in products aimed at reactive skin.
- Arginine amino acid
- Arginine is an amino acid that does two jobs here: it holds water in the outer layer of skin, and it neutralises acidic gelling agents, which is why it often stands in for a synthetic pH adjuster.
- Tyrosine amino acid
- Tyrosine is an amino acid used as a conditioning humectant in amino acid complexes.
- Phenylalanine amino acid
- Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid used in skincare as a conditioning humectant.
- Proline amino acid
- Proline is an amino acid abundant in collagen and one of skin's own humectants. Added to a formula it holds water in the outer layer.
- Threonine amino acid
- Threonine is an essential amino acid used in skincare as a humectant, normally as part of an amino acid complex rather than alone.
- Valine amino acid
- Valine is an essential amino acid used as a humectant alongside the rest of an amino acid block.
- Isoleucine amino acid
- Isoleucine is an essential amino acid used as a conditioning humectant within an amino acid complex.
- Histidine amino acid
- Histidine is an amino acid used as a humectant and a buffer, part of skin's own free amino acid pool.
- Cysteine amino acid
- Cysteine is a sulphur-bearing amino acid used as a humectant and antioxidant. It is one of the three building blocks of glutathione.
- Methionine amino acid
- Methionine is a sulphur-bearing essential amino acid used as a humectant and mild antioxidant.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- Bifida Ferment Lysate ferment
- Bifida Ferment Lysate is a bifidobacteria ferment with the cells broken open. It is the ingredient behind the first-essence category and is used for the look of tired, reactive skin.
- Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate ferment
- Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate is the ferment with the bacterial cells broken open, so their contents are in the formula too. It is a conditioning ferment used in barrier-focused products.
- Sodium Benzoate preservative
- Sodium Benzoate is a mild preservative that works only in acidic formulas. It is usually paired with potassium sorbate, and the pair is the standard choice where a brand wants no phenoxyethanol.
- 1,2-Hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
