Glycerin humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

Purified Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate surfactant

An amino-acid surfactant built from coconut fatty acids and glycine. Amino-acid surfactants clean at a pH close to the pH of skin itself, which is why low-pH Korean cleansers are built on them.

Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate surfactant

Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate is an amino-acid-derived cleansing surfactant. It lifts oil and makeup at a pH close to skin's own, which is why it replaced sulfates in gentle cleansers.

Hydrated Silica absorbent

Hydrated Silica is silica holding bound water. It absorbs oil, thickens, and in a toothpaste or scrub works as a mild polishing grain.

Dipropylene Glycol humectant

Dipropylene Glycol is a glycol used as a solvent and a light humectant. Its main job is keeping the rest of the formula dissolved and the texture fluid rather than adding hydration of its own.

Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate surfactant

Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate is a very mild coconut-derived surfactant used in cleansers for reactive skin and around the eyes.

Gardenia Extract plant extract

A gardenia extract declared by common name, with the plant part unstated. Gardenia is the traditional East Asian yellow dye plant, so an extract of it can tint a formula.

Houttuynia Cordata Extract (10Ppm) plant extract

Houttuynia Cordata is heartleaf, and it is one of the two or three anchor plants of Korean calming skincare. Its extract carries quercitrin and other flavonoids and is used for the look of redness and blemish-prone skin.

Eclipta Prostrata Leaf Extract plant extract

Eclipta Prostrata is false daisy, long used in Ayurvedic and East Asian practice. Its extract is used as a conditioning plant extract, most often in scalp and hair formulas.

Neem Leaf Extract plant extract

Melia Azadirachta is neem. Its leaf and flower extracts are long-standing Ayurvedic ingredients, and Korean formulas use them in products aimed at the look of congested, blemish-prone skin.

Grape Extract plant extract

A grape extract declared by common name, with the plant part unstated. Grape fruit and skin carry polyphenols and fruit acids, while the seed is the source of proanthocyanidins.
