How to use
- Use the Deep Cleansing Oil Balm & Blackhead as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin, before any water reaches the face.
- With dry hands, apply an appropriate amount to a dry face and gently massage. Add a little water and massage again to emulsify into a milky texture, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
- Emulsify with a little water until it goes milky, rinse, then follow with a water-based cleanser and your toner.
- Once a day, in the evening. Do not skip the second cleanse after it; a balm that is only rinsed leaves a film the next layer has to sit on.
Does this product contain added fragrance?
No. Neither fragrance nor parfum appears on the ingredient list for Hanskin Deep Cleansing Oil Balm & Blackhead 100ml. Those are the two names a cosmetic label uses for an added scent blend, so a formula carrying one would name it. The full list is printed in the Ingredients section of this page.
Does this product contain essential oils?
Yes. The ingredient list for Hanskin Deep Cleansing Oil Balm & Blackhead 100ml includes Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil and Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil. Aromatic plant oils are listed under their botanical name rather than as fragrance, so they are named separately from any fragrance or parfum entry.
Are any declarable fragrance allergens listed?
Yes. Limonene appears on the ingredient list for Hanskin Deep Cleansing Oil Balm & Blackhead 100ml. These belong to the 26 fragrance components that EU cosmetic labelling requires to be named individually rather than folded into a fragrance entry.
Does this product contain denatured or SD alcohol?
No. The ingredient list for Hanskin Deep Cleansing Oil Balm & Blackhead 100ml names no denatured alcohol, SD alcohol or ethanol. Fatty alcohols such as cetyl and cetearyl alcohol are a different class of ingredient, used as emollients and thickeners, and are not counted here.
Not on the ingredient list below: fragrance or parfum, denatured or SD alcohol, silicones, parabens, sulfate surfactants and added color.

39 of 41 explained
- Ethylhexyl Palmitate emollient
- Ethylhexyl Palmitate is a palm-derived ester used as a light emollient and a solvent for pigment. It gives a smooth, non-greasy slip.
- Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil emollient
- Rice Bran Oil is pressed from the bran left over from milling rice. It carries vitamin E and a group of rice-specific antioxidants, and it is a light emollient.
- Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate emulsifier
- Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate is an emulsifier used in cleansing oils so the oil can be rinsed off with water rather than wiped away.
- Synthetic Wax occlusive
- Synthetic Wax is a purpose-built hydrocarbon wax used to structure balms and sticks. It is odourless and does not oxidise, unlike most natural waxes.
- C10-18 Triglycerides emollient
- A blend of triglycerides in a soft, butter-like form. It melts near skin temperature, which is why it appears in balms and cleansing sherbets.
- Microcrystalline Wax occlusive
- Microcrystalline Wax is a fine-crystalled petroleum wax. It gives balms and sticks body and flexibility and holds oil from separating out.
- Hydrogenated Coconut Oil occlusive
- Coconut oil with hydrogen added, which raises its melting point and makes it a firm solid. It gives balms and sticks their body.
- Silica absorbent
- Silica is finely milled mineral, essentially very pure sand. It absorbs oil, stops powders clumping and soft-focuses the look of pores and fine lines.
- Glyceryl Stearate emulsifier
- Glyceryl Stearate is glycerin joined to stearic acid, and one of the most used emulsifiers in skincare. It holds oil and water together and thickens the result, and it softens skin at the same time.
- PEG-100 Stearate emulsifier
- PEG-100 Stearate is a water-loving emulsifier almost always paired with glyceryl stearate. Together they form the standard cream base of the last fifty years.
- Salicylic Acid exfoliant
- Salicylic Acid is a BHA, and the only common exfoliant that is oil soluble, so it can work inside a pore rather than only on the surface. It loosens the dead cells that block pores and is used for the look of congested, oily skin.
- Gluconolactone exfoliant
- Gluconolactone is a PHA, the gentlest exfoliant class. Its molecule is too large to penetrate quickly, so it smooths the surface without the sting of an AHA, and it is a humectant at the same time.
27 more explained
- Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil fragrance
- Cold-pressed lemon peel oil. Citrus peel oils carry limonene and can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, which is why leave-on formulas use them sparingly.
- Rosa Canina Fruit Oil emollient
- Rosehip oil, pressed from the fruit of the dog rose. It is high in linoleic acid and carotenoids and is used for the look of marked, uneven skin.
- Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil emollient
- Jojoba Oil is a liquid wax rather than a true oil, and its structure is close to human sebum, which is why it absorbs so readily. It is an emollient that leaves a soft, non-greasy finish.
- Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil fragrance component
- Sweet Orange Peel Oil is a citrus essential oil carrying limonene. It scents a formula, and limonene is one of the components EU labelling names separately.
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Citric Acid pH adjuster
- Citric Acid is used in tiny amounts to bring a formula to the pH its actives need, not as an exfoliant at that level. It is an AHA, so at much higher concentrations it can also exfoliate.
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid exfoliant
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid is salicylic acid with a fatty tail, sometimes sold as LHA. It stays nearer the surface than salicylic acid and works at a higher pH, so it exfoliates more evenly and more gently.
- Allantoin active
- Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin.
- Panthenol humectant
- Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- Jojoba Esters emollient
- Jojoba Esters are jojoba wax rebuilt into a softer, meltable form. They condition skin and give body to balms without the heaviness of a butter.
- 1,2-Hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract plant extract
- Papaya fruit extract. The fruit is where the enzyme papain comes from, and the extract is used both as a conditioning extract and in gentle enzyme formulas.
- Malus Domestica Fruit Extract plant extract
- Apple fruit extract, carrying malic acid, sugars and polyphenols. It is used as a conditioning extract and a mild source of fruit acid.
- Prunus Mume Fruit Extract plant extract
- Korean plum extract, from the fruit used to make maesil syrup. It is acidic and carries organic acids and polyphenols.
- Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Fruit Extract plant extract
- Grape Fruit Extract carries polyphenols and fruit acids. It is used as an antioxidant plant extract.
- Sodium Hyaluronate humectant
- Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.
- Kummerowia Striata Extract plant extract
- Japanese clover extract, a small legume used in East Asian herbal practice. It is a conditioning plant extract.
- Pinus Palustris Leaf Extract plant extract
- Pinus Palustris is longleaf pine. Its needle extract carries plant antioxidants and appears in Korean formulas alongside other conifer extracts.
- Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract plant extract
- Ulmus Davidiana is Japanese elm, whose inner bark yields a naturally slippery mucilage. Korean formulas use the root extract for that cushioned feel and for the look of reactive skin.
- Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Flower Extract plant extract
- Evening Primrose Flower Extract is used as a conditioning plant extract. The seed oil of the same plant is the better known part, and it is a different ingredient.
- Pueraria Lobata Root Extract plant extract
- Pueraria Lobata is kudzu. Its root extract carries isoflavones, plant compounds structurally similar to oestrogen, and Korean formulas use it for the look of thinning, less resilient skin.
- Cinchona Pubescens Bark Extract plant extract
- Cinchona bark extract, the bark quinine comes from. In cosmetics it is used as a conditioning extract, most often in scalp products.
- Leptospermum Scoparium Leaf Extract plant extract
- Manuka leaf extract, from the tree manuka honey comes from. It resists microbes and is used for the look of congested skin.
- Tocopherol antioxidant
- Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- Limonene fragrance component
- Limonene is the citrus-peel aromatic. It appears here because EU labelling requires 26 fragrance components to be named individually rather than hidden inside "fragrance", and it is one of them.
