Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Cyclopentasiloxane silicone

Cyclopentasiloxane is a volatile silicone: it spreads a formula thin and smooth then evaporates, leaving no residue. It is the silicone behind a dry, powdery primer finish.

Phenyl Trimethicone silicone

Phenyl Trimethicone is a silicone with a higher refractive index than most, so it adds visible gloss as well as slip. It is common in glow and lip textures.

Glycerin humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

Propanediol humectant

Propanediol is a plant-derived glycol used in place of propylene glycol. It hydrates, carries actives into solution, and gives a lighter, less sticky slip than glycerin at the same strength.

Cyclohexasiloxane silicone

Cyclohexasiloxane is a volatile silicone used for a light, fast-spreading feel that leaves nothing behind.

Trimethylsiloxysilicate silicone

A silicone resin supplied in a volatile carrier. The carrier flashes off and the resin stays behind as a light, transfer-resistant film.

Silica absorbent

Silica is finely milled mineral, essentially very pure sand. It absorbs oil, stops powders clumping and soft-focuses the look of pores and fine lines.

Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone emulsifier

A silicone emulsifier carrying both a fatty lauryl chain and water friendly glycol units. It is what holds water inside a silicone base, so it is common in long wearing formulas.

Dimethicone silicone

Dimethicone is the most used cosmetic silicone. It forms a breathable film that smooths the surface, slows water leaving skin, and gives the slip that makes a primer or cream feel silky. It is inert and does not penetrate.

PEG-10 Dimethicone silicone

PEG-10 Dimethicone is a silicone with a water-loving chain attached, so it bridges the silicone and water phases. It is used as an emulsifier and to give a light, silky feel.

Iron Oxide Yellow colorant

Iron Oxides are mineral pigments in red, yellow and black, and the three are blended to make every skin-tone shade in a tinted product. They are inert and sit on the surface.
