Jeju as a sourcing story, told for twenty years

innisfree built its whole range on ingredients sourced from Jeju island, and the naming is unusually literal about it: green tea for the hydration line, volcanic cluster clay for the pore products, bija for blemishes, camellia for hair and oils. It is the longest running single origin story in Korean mass beauty and the ingredient is on the front of the box rather than buried in the list.

Green tea, niacinamide and squalane lead its actives here. The Korean range is considerably wider than the exported one, particularly in cleansers, clay masks and colour, which is the usual shape of an Amorepacific brand abroad.

Green tea, volcanic clay, or bija?

They map onto three different problems and mixing them is the mistake. Green tea is the hydration line and the safest place to start, since the seed serum and the toner work for most skin types. Volcanic clay is for oil and visible pores and belongs in a wash off, once or twice a week rather than daily. Bija is the blemish line. If your skin is oily and dehydrated at once, which is common, take the green tea route for the daily routine and keep the clay as the weekly step.

Does the Jeju sourcing claim hold up?

It is a sourcing claim rather than a performance one, which makes it the kind you can actually check: the botanical is named on the front and it appears in the ingredient list on the page. What is worth knowing is that the Korean and export catalogues of this brand differ more in which products exist than in what is inside them, and the Korean shelf keeps formats and sizes that were never offered abroad. Every listing here carries the Korean barcode.
