Polybutene film former

Polybutene is a thick, sticky synthetic liquid polymer. It supplies the tack in a spot patch and the cushioned shine in a lip product.

Squalane emollient

Squalane is the stable, saturated version of squalene, a lipid human skin already makes. It is a light emollient that absorbs quickly, does not oxidise, and is one of the few oils widely considered safe for blemish-prone skin. Most cosmetic squalane is now from sugarcane or olive rather than shark.

Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil emollient

Rice Bran Oil is pressed from the bran left over from milling rice. It carries vitamin E and a group of rice-specific antioxidants, and it is a light emollient.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter emollient

Shea Butter is the fat pressed from the shea nut, rich in oleic and stearic acids and unsaponifiable plant sterols. It is a heavy emollient and partial occlusive, which is why it sits in balms and night creams rather than in essences.

Polyethylene thickener

Polyethylene in a formula is a wax-like polymer used to thicken oils and set sticks. It is the same polymer family as plastic film, in a soft grade.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil occlusive

Plant oil hardened by hydrogenation. It behaves as a soft solid, so it gives balms and sticks their body and slows water loss from the surface.

Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2 emollient

Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2 is a thick synthetic emollient built to mimic the lipids in skin's own surface. It is used in balms for a cushioned, sealing feel.

Ozokerite occlusive

Ozokerite is a mineral wax used to set sticks and balms. It binds oils into a solid that holds its shape in heat instead of sweating or blooming on the surface.

Tocopheryl Acetate antioxidant

Tocopheryl Acetate is a stable vitamin E ester that skin converts to tocopherol. It is used as an antioxidant and a light emollient and holds up better than plain vitamin E in a formula.

Silica absorbent

Silica is finely milled mineral, essentially very pure sand. It absorbs oil, stops powders clumping and soft-focuses the look of pores and fine lines.

Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate emulsifier

Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate is a water-in-oil emulsifier used in balms and rich creams, and a good pigment disperser.

Honey Extract humectant

Honey is a natural humectant loaded with sugars and trace acids. In a formula it holds water at the surface and leaves a soft, cushioned feel.
