Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate surfactant

A sulfosuccinate surfactant: milder than a sulfate, with more foam than an amino-acid one. It is often used to soften a sulfate-based cleanser.

Glycerin humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

Lauryl Glucoside surfactant

A sugar surfactant made from glucose and a fatty alcohol. Glucosides carry no charge, which is what makes them mild, and they give a soft low foam.

Lauryl Betaine surfactant

Lauryl Betaine is a secondary surfactant that boosts foam and thickens a cleanser while reducing how stripping the main surfactant feels.

Decyl Glucoside surfactant

Decyl Glucoside is a sugar and coconut-derived surfactant, one of the mildest cleansers available. It produces a soft, low foam and rinses without stripping.

1,2-Hexanediol humectant

1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.

Honey Extract humectant

Honey is a natural humectant loaded with sugars and trace acids. In a formula it holds water at the surface and leaves a soft, cushioned feel.

Hydrolyzed Keratin protein

Hydrolyzed Keratin is keratin, the protein hair and nails are built from, cut into fragments small enough to dissolve. In a formula it is a humectant and a smoothing film former.

Milk Protein Extract protein

Milk Protein Extract supplies milk proteins and the lactose alongside them. It is used as a conditioning, water-holding ingredient.

Copper Tripeptide-1 peptide

Copper Tripeptide-1 is three amino acids bound to a copper ion, and the classic firming peptide in cosmetic chemistry. It is blue in solution, which is often why a serum carrying it is tinted, and it is used for the look of firmness and fine lines.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter emollient

Shea Butter is the fat pressed from the shea nut, rich in oleic and stearic acids and unsaponifiable plant sterols. It is a heavy emollient and partial occlusive, which is why it sits in balms and night creams rather than in essences.
