Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Cyclopentasiloxane silicone

Cyclopentasiloxane is a volatile silicone: it spreads a formula thin and smooth then evaporates, leaving no residue. It is the silicone behind a dry, powdery primer finish.

Phenyl Trimethicone silicone

Phenyl Trimethicone is a silicone with a higher refractive index than most, so it adds visible gloss as well as slip. It is common in glow and lip textures.

Iron Oxide Yellow colorant

Iron Oxides are mineral pigments in red, yellow and black, and the three are blended to make every skin-tone shade in a tinted product. They are inert and sit on the surface.

Butylene Glycol humectant

Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.

Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone silicone

A silicone emulsifier used to hold water inside an oil or silicone phase. It is the standard emulsifier in a cushion or a silicone-based primer.

Trimethylsiloxysilicate silicone

A silicone resin supplied in a volatile carrier. The carrier flashes off and the resin stays behind as a light, transfer-resistant film.

Polymethyl Methacrylate absorbent

Polymethyl Methacrylate is an acrylic polymer used as fine spheres. They give a smooth, powdery slip and blur the look of surface texture.

Mica colorant

Mica is a mineral ground into fine flakes. It scatters light, so it lightens a shade and gives the soft glow of a tinted or illuminating product.

PEG-10 Dimethicone silicone

PEG-10 Dimethicone is a silicone with a water-loving chain attached, so it bridges the silicone and water phases. It is used as an emulsifier and to give a light, silky feel.

Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer silicone

A silicone elastomer powder. It changes how light falls on skin so texture looks softer, absorbs a little oil, and leaves a dry velvet finish.

Sodium Chloride thickener

Sodium Chloride is salt. In a cleanser it thickens the liquid; in a mask or essence it balances the mineral content of the water phase. It has no active role.
