Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil emollient

Sunflower Seed Oil is high in linoleic acid, the fatty acid dry and blemish-prone skin is often short of. It is a light, non-fragrant emollient and one of the better tolerated plant oils.

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter emollient

Shea Butter is the fat pressed from the shea nut, rich in oleic and stearic acids and unsaponifiable plant sterols. It is a heavy emollient and partial occlusive, which is why it sits in balms and night creams rather than in essences.

Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil emollient

Coconut Oil is high in lauric acid, which makes it a rich emollient and partial occlusive. It is well known to be poorly suited to blemish-prone skin.

Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax occlusive

Candelilla wax, from a desert shrub, and the usual plant substitute for beeswax. It gives sticks and balms a firm, slightly brittle set.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil occlusive

Plant oil hardened by hydrogenation. It behaves as a soft solid, so it gives balms and sticks their body and slows water loss from the surface.

Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax occlusive

Carnauba wax comes from a Brazilian palm leaf and is the hardest wax in common cosmetic use. A small amount raises the melting point of a stick sharply.

Camphor fragrance component

Camphor is the aromatic compound distilled from the camphor laurel. It has a sharp medicinal smell and gives a cooling feel as it evaporates.

Cetyl Palmitate emollient

Cetyl Palmitate is a wax ester, the same kind of molecule that makes up much of spermaceti and jojoba. It thickens the oil phase and leaves a smooth, non-greasy film.

Sorbitan Olivate emulsifier

Sorbitan Olivate is an olive-derived emulsifier, the oil-loving half of the pair sold as Olivem. It holds oil into water and leaves a light, non-waxy feel.

Sorbitan Palmitate emulsifier

Sorbitan Palmitate is a sugar-derived emulsifier, usually paired with a polysorbate, used to hold oil and water together in creams.

Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil emollient

Macadamia Seed Oil is unusually high in palmitoleic acid, a fatty acid that human sebum also contains, which is why it absorbs faster than most nut oils. It is a cushioning emollient for dry skin.

Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil emollient

Sweet almond oil, one of the oldest cosmetic oils. It is high in oleic acid, which makes it richer and slower to absorb than the linoleic oils.
