Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Cyclopentasiloxane silicone

Cyclopentasiloxane is a volatile silicone: it spreads a formula thin and smooth then evaporates, leaving no residue. It is the silicone behind a dry, powdery primer finish.

Trimethylsiloxysilicate silicone

A silicone resin supplied in a volatile carrier. The carrier flashes off and the resin stays behind as a light, transfer-resistant film.

Butylene Glycol humectant

Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.

Cyclohexasiloxane silicone

Cyclohexasiloxane is a volatile silicone used for a light, fast-spreading feel that leaves nothing behind.

Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate emulsifier

Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate is a plant-derived emulsifier for water-in-oil formulas. It appears in cleansing balms and rich creams built without PEGs.

Synthetic Fluorphlogopite colorant

Synthetic mica, grown rather than mined, which makes it purer and more transparent than the natural mineral. It scatters light and carries pearlescent pigments.

PEG-10 Dimethicone silicone

PEG-10 Dimethicone is a silicone with a water-loving chain attached, so it bridges the silicone and water phases. It is used as an emulsifier and to give a light, silky feel.

Isododecane solvent

Isododecane is a light, volatile hydrocarbon. It carries pigments and film formers on smoothly and then evaporates, leaving the film behind and nothing oily.

Magnesium Sulfate mineral

Magnesium Sulfate is Epsom salt, used as a mineral salt in the water phase. Despite the name it is not a cleansing sulfate and does not foam.

Disteardimonium Hectorite thickener

Disteardimonium Hectorite is a modified clay used to thicken the oil phase and stop pigments settling to the bottom of the bottle.

Phenoxyethanol preservative

Phenoxyethanol is the most widely used cosmetic preservative outside the paraben family. It keeps a water-containing formula from growing bacteria and mould, and is capped at one percent in most markets, so it always sits low on a list.
