How it works

Round Lab Mugwort Calming Serum is built as a serum, so its texture and finish are designed around one specific place in a routine rather than several. The formula's own ingredient list carries Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Sodium Hyaluronate, Allantoin among its named ingredients, placed at a level consistent with a serum rather than a spot treatment. The texture is built for use after your toner or essence and before your moisturizer, the concentrated middle step of a routine, which is why it behaves differently on skin than a product meant for a different point in a routine. This is the Korean-market formula of the mugwort calming serum, the version sold on shelves in Korea rather than a formula reworked for a different market.

Key benefits

  • Mugwort Calming Serum is Round Lab's serum, sourced for the Korean market rather than reformulated for US shelves.
  • Carries Betaine, which is a sugar beet-derived humectant that helps this formula feel less stripping on contact.
  • Carries Artemisia Vulgaris Extract, which is mugwort (Artemisia) extract, a calming botanical long used in Korean folk skincare and now a mainstay of soothing formulas.
  • Carries Panthenol, which is provitamin B5, a humectant that helps a formula feel less tight after it dries down.
  • Ships with the Korean-market barcode and batch code intact, the same box sold on Korean shelves rather than a US repack.
  • Suited to shoppers targeting redness and easily-stressed skin.

Key actives

Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5)

A humectant and skin-conditioning agent that helps the formula feel soft and comfortable rather than tight once it has absorbed, a staple of Korean toners and creams.

Sodium Hyaluronate

A smaller-molecule form of hyaluronic acid that spreads easily and helps the finish feel dewy rather than heavy.

Allantoin

A conditioning ingredient long used in Korean skincare to keep a formula feeling calm and comfortable on skin that runs sensitive.

Madecassoside (Centella Asiatica)

The signature centella (cica) compound in Korean calming skincare, included here to keep the finish feeling settled rather than reactive on skin that flushes easily.

Asiaticoside (Centella Asiatica)

A centella-derived compound from the same cica family as madecassoside, carried in this formula for its place in calming-focused Korean skincare.

How to use

  1. Use the Mugwort Calming Serum after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening.
  2. Apply an appropriate amount on clean skin and gently pat to aid absorption.
  3. Toner first so the surface is damp, then this, then about a minute before your moisturizer goes over the top.
  4. Twice a day, every day. Do not stack it with a second serum of the same kind; two hydrating serums in one routine do the work of one.

Worth knowing

  • Introduce a new serum gradually rather than every day at first, so it is easier to tell if skin is reacting to it specifically.
  • Seal it with a moisturizer rather than leaving it to sit alone, since a serum is a middle step and not built to finish a routine.

What skin-care professionals say about the key actives in this formula, quoted from the medical sources linked beside each.

  • Pantothenol is a common ingredient in skin care and hair products I recommend, particularly for people who are prone to dryness.

Taylor Bullock, MDDermatology resident, Cleveland Clinic
  • Hyaluronic acid helps bind water to collagen, which traps water in the skin. That helps make the skin more plump and full-looking.

  • Allantoin can tone down the dryness of the individual cells. It increases the water content of the skin, which means it helps to hydrate and moisturize.
