Water solvent

Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.

Glycerin humectant

Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.

C18-21 Alkane emollient

A saturated hydrocarbon emollient in the same family as squalane, usually made from plant sugar or plant oil. It gives a dry, silicone like slip without a greasy finish.

Methylpropanediol humectant

Methylpropanediol is a small glycol used to hydrate and to help water-soluble actives penetrate the outer layer of skin more evenly. It leaves almost no tack, which suits watery textures.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil occlusive

Plant oil hardened by hydrogenation. It behaves as a soft solid, so it gives balms and sticks their body and slows water loss from the surface.

Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract plant extract

Cucumber fruit extract, mostly water with sugars and amino acids. It is used as a light hydrating extract with a fresh, cooling character.

Mentha Aquatica Extract plant extract

Water mint extract. It carries the aromatic compounds and polyphenols of the mint family and gives a faint cooling sensation on the surface.

Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract plant extract

Rosemary Leaf Extract carries rosmarinic and carnosic acids, both effective antioxidants. It is often there to keep the oils in a formula from going rancid.

Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Extract plant extract

Eucalyptus leaf extract, the water-based extract rather than the essential oil. It carries tannins and flavonoids with only a trace of the aroma.

Bambusa Vulgaris Extract plant extract

Bamboo extract. Bamboo concentrates silica as it grows, so the extract is used as a hydrating, mineral-bearing ingredient.

Sodium Hyaluronate humectant

Sodium Hyaluronate is the salt of hyaluronic acid, and it is what most products labelled hyaluronic actually contain. The salt dissolves more readily and the molecule is smaller, so it sits in the outer layer of skin rather than only on top of it.

Betaine humectant

Betaine is a sugar-beet-derived humectant that cells use to hold water. In a formula it hydrates and takes the edge off cleansers and acids, which is why it often appears alongside them.
