How it works

The Pore Firming Serum: Red Bean + PDRN is a 30ml serum, used after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening. The active it is built around is Sodium DNA, named twenty-first on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Niacinamide, Adenosine and Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Sodium DNA stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the serum format rather than by the list alone. Beauty of Joseon sells this Sodium DNA serum in Korea, and this is that version.

Key benefits

  • Sodium DNA, the active this serum is built around
  • Niacinamide and Adenosine on the same list, actives
  • Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate on the same list, a peptide
  • Ceramide NP on the same list, a barrier lipid
  • Beta-Glucan and Coptis Japonica Root Extract further down the same list
  • Centella Asiatica Extract and Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract further down the same list

Key actives

Sodium DNAactive

Sodium DNA is the salt of DNA, in Korean skincare almost always salmon derived, and it is the ingredient behind the PDRN category. It is used as a humectant and for the look of tired skin; the fragments themselves are what the name PDRN refers to. It is the entry this serum is named after, and the list carries it.

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. The panel names it fifth on this serum's list, beside Sodium DNA.

Adenosineactive

Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated. It is named fourteenth on this serum's list, alongside Sodium DNA.

Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetatepeptide

This is a two-amino-acid peptide, sold as Syn-Ake, used for the look of expression lines. Its structure was modelled on a component of snake venom, though nothing of the venom itself is in it. It is named twenty-seventh on this serum's list, alongside Sodium DNA.

Ceramide NPbarrier lipid

Ceramide NP is the most used cosmetic ceramide, the same class of lipid that makes up roughly half the mortar between cells in the outer layer of skin. Added to a cream it slots into that structure, which is why ceramide formulas feel less leaky rather than merely greasy. The panel names it twenty-fourth on this serum's list, beside Sodium DNA.

How to use

  1. Use the Pore Firming Serum: Red Bean + PDRN after toner and before moisturizer, morning and evening.
  2. Three or four drops covers the whole face. Press it in with flat palms instead of rubbing it around.
  3. Toner first so the surface is damp, then this, then about a minute before your moisturizer goes over the top.
  4. Twice a day, every day. Do not stack it with a second serum of the same kind; two hydrating serums in one routine do the work of one.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this serum on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Sodium DNA on the list.
  • Introduce this serum on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Sodium DNA rather than to three changes at once.

  • Niacinamide helps reduce the appearance of pores in a few ways. By strengthening the skin barrier and improving elasticity, pores appear less noticeable and more even.
