The Vita C Cleansing Balm is a 100ml cleansing balm, used as the first of two evening cleanses, on dry skin, before any water reaches the face. The antioxidant it is built around is Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, named eighth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Allantoin, Niacinamide and Papain, so the antioxidant is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the cleansing balm format rather than by the list alone. How to use
- Scoop a small amount and warm it between dry fingertips until it turns to an oil, then massage over dry skin and makeup for thirty seconds to a minute. Add water to emulsify, rinse thoroughly, and follow with a water-based cleanser as the second step.

- Ethylhexyl Palmitate emollient
- Ethylhexyl Palmitate is a palm-derived ester used as a light emollient and a solvent for pigment. It gives a smooth, non-greasy slip.
- Polyglyceryl-6 Dicaprate emulsifier
- A plant-derived emulsifier and mild cleanser. It is common in cleansing oils that rinse without leaving a film.
- Polyethylene thickener
- Polyethylene in a formula is a wax-like polymer used to thicken oils and set sticks. It is the same polymer family as plastic film, in a soft grade.
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride emollient
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is the light fraction of coconut oil, with the heavy parts removed. It is the workhorse emollient of modern formulas: it softens skin, dissolves oil-soluble actives and absorbs without the greasy weight of a whole plant oil.
- Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Fruit Oil emollient
- Oil from the pulp of the sea buckthorn berry rather than from its seed. The pulp oil is the richer and more strongly coloured of the two.
- Tocopherol antioxidant
- Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer.
- Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate antioxidant
- Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate is an oil-soluble vitamin C ester, also sold as tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. Being oil soluble it sits in the oil phase and is far more stable than pure vitamin C.
- Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate antioxidant
- Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a stable, water-soluble vitamin C salt. It works at a near-neutral pH, so it suits formulas built for skin that finds pure ascorbic acid stinging.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Papain exfoliant
- Papain is a protein-cutting enzyme from papaya. Enzyme exfoliants act on protein rather than on the bonds an acid targets, and they need water to work, which is why they suit powder washes.
- Allantoin active
- Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin.
