How it works
A hydrocolloid patch is a physical cover rather than a formula: it sticks to a clean dry surface, absorbs what a weeping spot gives off, and keeps your fingers off it. That last part is most of the value, since picking is what turns a two day spot into a two week mark. Being thin, these sit flat enough to wear under makeup rather than only overnight, which is what the mixed sizes are for. That is the difference from a spot cream, which is the better choice for a closed bump because a patch has nothing to hold onto and nothing to absorb. What you can judge is whether the patch has gone cloudy when you take it off.

How to use

Can I wear one under makeup?
These are thin enough for that, which is what the smaller sizes are for. Apply it to bare clean skin first, then work makeup around and lightly over the edges. Do not apply moisturizer under it, because the patch will lift within minutes and be useless for the day.
How long should I leave one on?
At least six hours, and overnight is easiest. Taking it off early to check gives you a patch that no longer sticks and a spot you are now touching. If it goes cloudy and lifts at an edge before six hours, replace it with a fresh one rather than pressing it back.

- Petroleum Resin film former
- Petroleum Resin is a tackifier: it is what gives a hydrocolloid patch its grip on skin without a wet adhesive. It is inert and stays on the surface.
- Cellulose Gum thickener
- Cellulose Gum is plant cellulose modified to dissolve in water. It thickens, holds particles in suspension and gives a smooth, slippery body.
- Styrene Isoprene Styrene Block Copolymer film former
- This is the rubbery backbone of a pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is what lets a patch sit on a curved surface for hours and still peel away in one piece.
- Polyurethane Film film former
- Polyurethane Film is the thin backing sheet of a patch. It holds the hydrocolloid mass in place and keeps the outside dry while the side against skin stays sealed.
- Polyisobutylene film former
- Polyisobutene is a synthetic polymer that forms a flexible, water-resistant film. It gives gloss and holds a formula in place, which is why it appears in lip products and long-wear textures.
- Liquid Paraffin occlusive
- Liquid Paraffin is highly refined mineral oil. It is among the least reactive occlusives in cosmetics: it stays on the surface, slows water loss, and carries nothing into skin.
- Tetrakis Methane antioxidant
- This is a stabiliser that keeps the oils and fragrance in a formula from oxidising. Its job is the shelf life of the product rather than any effect on skin.
