One Step Original Tone Clarifying Moisture Pad

Rice bran water is the first ingredient on this pad's own list, ahead of water, with niacinamide fifth, gluconolactone seventh, alpha-arbutin and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid behind them: a textured side to sweep and a soft side to finish.

How it works

The One Step Original Tone Clarifying Moisture Pad is a toner pad, used use one pad from it straight after cleansing, morning and evening. The active it is built around is Niacinamide, named fifth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Adenosine, Allantoin and Alpha-Arbutin, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Niacinamide stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the toner pad format rather than by the list alone. COSRX sells this Niacinamide toner pad in Korea, and this is that version.

Key benefits

  • Niacinamide, the active this toner pad is built around
  • Adenosine, Allantoin and Alpha-Arbutin on the same list, actives
  • Gluconolactone on the same list, an exfoliant
  • Pantothenic Acid and 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid further down the same list
  • Glutathione and Tocopherol further down the same list
  • Niacinamide named fifth on the manufacturer list printed on this page

Key actives

Niacinamideactive

Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. On this toner pad's own ingredient list it is named fifth.

Adenosineactive

Adenosine is a nucleoside that Korea's own cosmetic authority recognises as a wrinkle-care functional ingredient, which is why it appears on so many Korean lists at a low level. It is used for the look of fine lines and is stable and well tolerated. It is named eleventh on this toner pad's list, alongside Niacinamide.

Allantoinactive

Allantoin is a comfrey-derived compound used to condition skin and soften the outer layer so it feels smoother. It is one of the standard additions to a formula built for easily irritated skin. The panel names it eighteenth on this toner pad's list, beside Niacinamide.

Alpha-Arbutinactive

Alpha-Arbutin is a plant-derived compound, related to the sugar-bound form found in bearberry, used for the look of dark spots and uneven tone. It is stable in water and works at skin-friendly pH. The panel names it nineteenth on this toner pad's list, beside Niacinamide.

Gluconolactoneexfoliant

Gluconolactone is a PHA, the gentlest exfoliant class. It is named seventh on this toner pad's list, alongside Niacinamide.

How to use

  1. Use one pad from the One Step Original Tone Clarifying Moisture Pad straight after cleansing, morning or evening.
  2. Sweep it outward across the face, then press the smooth side over anywhere that looks uneven.
  3. It replaces the toner step, so serum and moisturizer follow while skin is still damp.
  4. One pad a session, once or twice a day. Do not skip sunscreen the next morning; work on uneven tone is undone by daily sun.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test this toner pad on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Niacinamide on the list.
  • Gluconolactone on this list makes this toner pad an exfoliating step, so do not stack it with another one on the same night.

What professionals say

What professionals say

What skin-care professionals say about the key actives in this formula, quoted from the medical sources linked beside each.

  • Allantoin can tone down the dryness of the individual cells. It increases the water content of the skin, which means it helps to hydrate and moisturize.

  • Arbutin works to inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme present in melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in the skin. This results in less pigment, dark spots and skin lightening.

  • Niacinamide helps reduce the appearance of pores in a few ways. By strengthening the skin barrier and improving elasticity, pores appear less noticeable and more even.
