Key actives
11Streptococcus Thermophilus Fermentferment
Streptococcus Thermophilus Ferment is a yoghurt-culture ferment. It is used for its conditioning effect on the outer layer of skin. The panel names it eleventh on this mist's list, beside Madecassoside.
22Aspergillus Fermentferment
Aspergillus Ferment is a mould ferment, from the same organism family used to make soy sauce and sake. It supplies amino acids and organic acids and is used as a conditioning ferment. It is named twenty-second on this mist's list, alongside Madecassoside.
25Madecassosideactive
Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams. On this mist's own ingredient list it is named twenty-fifth.
30Bifida Ferment Extractferment
An extract of a bifidobacteria culture, the same organism behind bifida ferment lysate. It is used as a conditioning ferment. It is named thirtieth on this mist's list, alongside Madecassoside.
34Lactobacillus Fermentferment
Lactobacillus Ferment is the liquid left after lactobacillus bacteria have fermented a plant or milk substrate. It carries the small molecules the fermentation produced, including lactic acid and amino acids, and is used for the look of dull, uneven skin. The panel names it thirty-fourth on this mist's list, beside Madecassoside.

Where does this mist go in my routine?
At any point in the day, over bare skin or over makeup. Anything thinner than a mist goes on before it, and anything richer goes on after. If you are adding it to a routine you already like, give it a week on its own first, so what you see is the Madecassoside and not three changes at once.
Is this the Korean-market mist or a US version?
The Korean-market one, Madecassoside and all. We match this mist to its Korean barcode before it reaches the shelf, which is the check that tells you which market release you are holding.
What else is on the list besides Madecassoside?
Streptococcus Thermophilus Ferment, Aspergillus Ferment and Bifida Ferment Extract. The order they are printed in on this mist's panel is the order on the box, so you can see where Madecassoside sits relative to them. Further down the same panel: Lactobacillus Ferment, Tocopherol and Hydrolyzed Rice Protein.
Not on the ingredient list below: fragrance or parfum, denatured or SD alcohol, essential oils, silicones, parabens, sulfate surfactants, mineral oil or petrolatum and added color.

35 of 36 explained
- Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Water plant extract
- Rice Bran Water is the water from washing or steeping rice bran, the traditional Korean and Japanese rinse. It is used in place of plain water as a formula base.
- 1,2-Hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- Triethylhexanoin emollient
- Triethylhexanoin is a light ester emollient that softens skin and disperses pigment. It absorbs cleanly and is often used to thin a heavy oil phase.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin) emollient
- Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin) is a synthetic hydrocarbon emollient. It gives a smooth, silicone-like glide and is completely stable, so it does not go rancid.
- Tocopherol antioxidant
- Tocopherol is vitamin E. It is an oil-soluble antioxidant that protects the oils in a formula from going rancid and works on skin as an emollient, and it is regularly paired with vitamin C because each keeps the other going for longer.
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- Methylpropanediol humectant
- Methylpropanediol is a small glycol used to hydrate and to help water-soluble actives penetrate the outer layer of skin more evenly. It leaves almost no tack, which suits watery textures.
- Pentylene Glycol humectant
- Pentylene Glycol hydrates and, like the other longer-chain glycols, makes a formula less hospitable to microbes so the preservative system can be lighter. It also improves how evenly a product spreads.
- Streptococcus Thermophilus Ferment ferment
- Streptococcus Thermophilus Ferment is a yoghurt-culture ferment. It is used for its conditioning effect on the outer layer of skin.
- Pyrus Malus (Apple) Juice plant extract
- Apple juice used in place of part of the water in a formula. It carries sugars and malic acid and is a dilute base ingredient rather than an active.
23 more explained
- Panthenol humectant
- Panthenol is pro-vitamin B5: skin converts it to pantothenic acid. It is a humectant that holds water and leaves skin feeling soft and less tight, and it is one of the ingredients formulators reach for when a formula also contains something harsh.
- Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid humectant
- Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid is hyaluronic acid cut into much shorter fragments. The smaller the fragment, the further into the outer layer it can settle, which is why serums stack several sizes together instead of using one.
- Polyquaternium-51 film former
- Polyquaternium-51 is a polymer, sometimes sold as Lipidure, built on the same phosphorylcholine structure as a cell membrane. It holds water in a film on the surface and gives a distinctive soft, dry finish.
- Betaine humectant
- Betaine is a sugar-beet-derived humectant that cells use to hold water. In a formula it hydrates and takes the edge off cleansers and acids, which is why it often appears alongside them.
- Cynanchum Atratum Extract plant extract
- Cynanchum Atratum is a root used in Korean traditional practice. Its extract is used as a conditioning plant extract in formulas for reactive skin.
- Althaea Rosea Flower Extract plant extract
- Althaea Rosea is hollyhock, a mallow relative rich in mucilage. Its flower extract hydrates and leaves a cushioned, slippery feel.
- Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract plant extract
- Rice Extract is the anchor of the Korean rice-skincare category. It carries starches, amino acids and ferulic acid, and it is used for the look of dullness and for a soft, blurred finish.
- Sea Salt mineral
- Sea Salt is the mineral residue of evaporated seawater: mostly sodium chloride with magnesium, calcium and potassium. It is used as a mild abrasive in scrubs and to adjust how thick a cleanser is.
- Aspergillus Ferment ferment
- Aspergillus Ferment is a mould ferment, from the same organism family used to make soy sauce and sake. It supplies amino acids and organic acids and is used as a conditioning ferment.
- Sodium Phytate chelator
- Sodium Phytate is a rice-derived chelator used in place of EDTA. It ties up trace metals so the formula stays stable and its colour and scent hold.
- Citric Acid pH adjuster
- Citric Acid is used in tiny amounts to bring a formula to the pH its actives need, not as an exfoliant at that level. It is an AHA, so at much higher concentrations it can also exfoliate.
- Madecassoside active
- Madecassoside is the centella triterpene most associated with the look of redness, and the one brands lead with in cica products. It is water soluble and stable, so it appears in essences as readily as in creams.
- Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hyaluronate humectant
- Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hyaluronate carries a positive charge, and skin carries a slight negative one, so it is attracted to the surface and stays through rinsing. It is the hyaluronic used where a formula gets washed off.
- Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract plant extract
- Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
- Houttuynia Cordata Extract plant extract
- Houttuynia Cordata is heartleaf, and it is one of the two or three anchor plants of Korean calming skincare. Its extract carries quercitrin and other flavonoids and is used for the look of redness and blemish-prone skin.
- Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water plant extract
- Aloe leaf water, the dilute form of aloe used in place of plain water. It carries some of the leaf polysaccharides and sugars.
- Bifida Ferment Extract ferment
- An extract of a bifidobacteria culture, the same organism behind bifida ferment lysate. It is used as a conditioning ferment.
- Hyaluronic Acid humectant
- Hyaluronic Acid is a sugar chain the body already makes, and one gram of it can hold several litres of water. In a formula it is a humectant that pulls water to the surface of skin and holds it in a film, which is what makes skin look plumper while it is there.
- Silanetriol mineral
- Silanetriol is a water-soluble form of silicon. It is used where a formula wants to carry silicon itself rather than the slip of a silicone.
- Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract plant extract
- Oat Kernel Extract carries beta-glucan and avenanthramides, and it is one of the most reliably tolerated ingredients in skincare. It is used for the look of reddened, itchy-feeling skin.
- Lactobacillus Ferment ferment
- Lactobacillus Ferment is the liquid left after lactobacillus bacteria have fermented a plant or milk substrate. It carries the small molecules the fermentation produced, including lactic acid and amino acids, and is used for the look of dull, uneven skin.
- Hydrolyzed Rice Protein protein
- Hydrolyzed Rice Protein is rice protein broken into small fragments. It is a humectant and film former that leaves a soft, smooth finish.
- Rice Amino Acids amino acid
- Rice Amino Acids are rice protein broken all the way down to its individual amino acids. At that size they act as humectants and leave a soft finish.

How it works
The 345 Relief Cream Mist is a 100ml mist, used at any point in the day, over bare skin or over makeup. The active it is built around is Madecassoside, named twenty-fifth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Streptococcus Thermophilus Ferment, Aspergillus Ferment and Bifida Ferment Extract, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Madecassoside stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the mist format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the mist Dr.Althea sells in Korea, Madecassoside and all.
How to use
- Shake the 345 Relief Cream Mist before every use, because a two-layer mist separates in the bottle between uses.
- Hold it about an arm's length from the face, two or three presses, then press what lands in with your palms.
- Use it after cleansing in place of a toner, or over a finished routine and over makeup when skin reads tight.
- As often as skin feels tight. Do not spray it without shaking first, or you get one layer and not the other.
Worth knowing
- Patch test this mist on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Madecassoside on the list.
- Introduce this mist on its own for the first week, so anything your skin does is traceable to the Madecassoside rather than to three changes at once.
