Key actives
15Niacinamideactive
Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. On this gel cleanser's own ingredient list it is named fifteenth.
18Camellia Japonica Flower Extractplant extract
Camellia Japonica Flower Extract comes from the flower of the Korean camellia. It is used as a conditioning, hydrating extract. The panel names it eighteenth on this gel cleanser's list, beside Niacinamide.
20Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extractplant extract
Red clover flower extract, carrying isoflavones. It is used as a conditioning plant extract. The panel names it twentieth on this gel cleanser's list, beside Niacinamide.
21Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extractplant extract
Aloe Leaf Extract is mostly water with polysaccharides, amino acids and mild plant acids. It hydrates and leaves a light, cooling film, which is why it is the default after-sun ingredient. The panel names it twenty-first on this gel cleanser's list, beside Niacinamide.
29Bioflavonoidsantioxidant
Bioflavonoids is a collective declaration for the flavonoid fraction of a plant extract, usually citrus. It names a class of plant antioxidants rather than one compound. The panel names it twenty-ninth on this gel cleanser's list, beside Niacinamide.

Where each key active sits on the declared ingredient list, by entry number. Position is proportion: the further forward, the larger its share.
Where does this gel cleanser go in my routine?
As your first step, morning and evening, on skin wet with lukewarm water. Nothing goes under it: this gel cleanser is the step everything else in the routine lands on top of. If you are adding it to a routine you already like, give it a week on its own first, so what you see is the Niacinamide and not three changes at once.
Is this the Korean-market gel cleanser or a US version?
The Korean-market one, Niacinamide and all. We match this gel cleanser to its Korean barcode before it reaches the shelf, which is the check that tells you which market release you are holding.
Does this gel cleanser contain fragrance?
Yes. The ingredient list names Fragrance. It sits on the panel printed on this page, so you can read the position for yourself before you buy. If fragrance components are something you avoid, this gel cleanser is not the one.
What else is on the list besides Niacinamide?
Bioflavonoids, Camellia Japonica Flower Extract and Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract. The order they are printed in on this gel cleanser's panel is the order on the box, so you can see where Niacinamide sits relative to them. Further down the same panel: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract and Centella Asiatica Extract.
Not on the ingredient list below: denatured or SD alcohol, essential oils, silicones, parabens, sulfate surfactants, mineral oil or petrolatum and added color.

31 of 34 explained
- Water solvent
- Water is the base almost every serum, toner and cream is built on. It dissolves the water-loving ingredients and sets how light the finished texture feels. On an INCI list it is usually first, which only means it is the largest single ingredient by weight.
- Glycerin humectant
- Glycerin is the most used humectant in skincare. It draws water into the outer layer of skin and holds it there, and it is one of the very few ingredients whose hydrating effect is settled science rather than marketing. Higher amounts feel tacky, which is why it is usually blended.
- Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate surfactant
- Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate is a very mild coconut-derived surfactant used in cleansers for reactive skin and around the eyes.
- 1,2-Hexanediol humectant
- 1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.
- Sodium Chloride thickener
- Sodium Chloride is salt. In a cleanser it thickens the liquid; in a mask or essence it balances the mineral content of the water phase. It has no active role.
- Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate emulsifier
- Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate is a sugar-derived emulsifier and solubiliser, mild enough to be a standard choice in Korean essences. It dissolves small amounts of oil into water without any tightening feel.
- Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate surfactant
- Potassium Cocoyl Glycinate is a coconut-and-glycine surfactant used in low-pH cleansers. It foams well and rinses without the squeaky tightness a soap leaves.
- Sorbitol humectant
- Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol used as a humectant. It hydrates like glycerin with a smoother, less sticky finish, and it adds a little body to watery textures.
- Butylene Glycol humectant
- Butylene Glycol is a small glycol that does two jobs at once: it holds water in the top layer of skin and it dissolves plant extracts and actives that plain water cannot. It also thins a formula, which is why watery Korean essences lean on it.
- Fragrance fragrance
- Fragrance, or Parfum, is a single declaration standing for a whole scent blend, which can be dozens of materials. Regulators allow it as a trade secret, so a list showing only this word does not say what the scent is made of. It is the most common trigger named by people with reactive skin.
- Ethylhexylglycerin preservative booster
- Ethylhexylglycerin softens skin and boosts a preservative system, which is why it is nearly always sitting beside phenoxyethanol or 1,2-hexanediol. It also cuts down the odour bacteria produce, so it turns up in deodorising products.
- Hexylene Glycol solvent
- Hexylene Glycol is a solvent and light humectant. It keeps ingredients that resist water in solution and thins a formula so it spreads evenly.
19 more explained
- Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate chelator
- A readily biodegradable chelator used in place of EDTA. It ties up trace metal ions in the water so they cannot spoil the formula.
- Citric Acid pH adjuster
- Citric Acid is used in tiny amounts to bring a formula to the pH its actives need, not as an exfoliant at that level. It is an AHA, so at much higher concentrations it can also exfoliate.
- Niacinamide active
- Niacinamide is vitamin B3, and it is the most studied active in Korean formulation. It is used at roughly 2 to 5 percent for the look of uneven tone and visible pores, and it is water soluble, stable and comfortable beside almost every other active, which is why it turns up in so many lists.
- Propanediol humectant
- Propanediol is a plant-derived glycol used in place of propylene glycol. It hydrates, carries actives into solution, and gives a lighter, less sticky slip than glycerin at the same strength.
- Isopentyldiol solvent
- Isopentyldiol is a glycol used as a light solvent and humectant. It thins a formula, keeps extracts dissolved and leaves a dry finish.
- Camellia Japonica Flower Extract plant extract
- Camellia Japonica Flower Extract comes from the flower of the Korean camellia. It is used as a conditioning, hydrating extract.
- Decyl Glucoside surfactant
- Decyl Glucoside is a sugar and coconut-derived surfactant, one of the mildest cleansers available. It produces a soft, low foam and rinses without stripping.
- Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract plant extract
- Red clover flower extract, carrying isoflavones. It is used as a conditioning plant extract.
- Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract plant extract
- Aloe Leaf Extract is mostly water with polysaccharides, amino acids and mild plant acids. It hydrates and leaves a light, cooling film, which is why it is the default after-sun ingredient.
- Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract plant extract
- Camellia Sinensis is the tea plant. Green tea leaf extract carries catechins, among the most studied plant antioxidants, and is used for the look of redness and oily shine.
- Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract plant extract
- Centella Asiatica is the plant behind the whole cica category, sold as gotu kola or Madagascar centella. Its extract is the anchor of Korean formulas built for easily reddened skin, and its work is done by four triterpenes: asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid and madecassic acid.
- Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract plant extract
- Willow Bark Extract carries salicin, the plant compound salicylic acid is related to. The two are not interchangeable: willow bark is a mild clarifying extract, not a BHA exfoliant at the levels used in cosmetics.
- Backhousia Citriodora Leaf Extract plant extract
- Lemon myrtle leaf extract, an Australian botanical high in citral. It carries the lemon aroma of the leaf along with polyphenols and is used as an aromatic plant extract.
- Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract plant extract
- Soybean Seed Extract carries isoflavones, plant sterols and soy proteins. It is used as a conditioning antioxidant extract.
- Bioflavonoid antioxidant
- Bioflavonoids is a collective declaration for the flavonoid fraction of a plant extract, usually citrus. It names a class of plant antioxidants rather than one compound.
- Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Leaf Extract plant extract
- Bergamot Leaf Extract is the water-based leaf extract rather than the peel oil, so it is far milder and much less aromatic.
- Brassica Oleracea Italica (Broccoli) Extract plant extract
- Broccoli extract, carrying sulforaphane and vitamin C. It is used as a plant antioxidant.
- Calamine absorbent
- Calamine is a mineral blend of zinc oxide with a trace of iron oxide, which is where its pale pink colour comes from. In a formula it is an absorbent mineral powder.
- Pinus Sylvestris Leaf Extract plant extract
- Scots pine needle extract. It carries pine terpenes and polyphenols and is used as a conditioning antioxidant extract.

How it works
The Melting Cleanser is a 150ml gel cleanser, used as your first step, morning and evening, on skin wet with lukewarm water. The active it is built around is Niacinamide, named fifteenth on its own ingredient list. The same list carries Bioflavonoids, Camellia Japonica Flower Extract and Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract, so the active is not the only thing on it worth naming. How much of the Niacinamide stays on the skin, and for how long, is decided by the gel cleanser format rather than by the list alone. This is the Original Korean Formula, the gel cleanser Dr. Melaxin sells in Korea, Niacinamide and all.
How to use
- Start on dry skin with dry hands, since water on the face first stops it doing its job.
- Massage for about a minute, working over the nose, jaw and hairline where sunscreen collects.
- Wet your fingers and keep massaging until it turns milky, then rinse fully with lukewarm water.
- Do not stop here, because a second wash with your usual cleanser is what clears the rest of the day.
Worth knowing
- Patch test this gel cleanser on a small area and wait a day before using it more widely, especially with Niacinamide on the list.
- This list names Fragrance, so skip it if fragrance components are something you avoid.
