How it works

A foaming cleanser is a rinse-off step, so nothing about it stays on the skin and it is judged by how the face feels a minute after rinsing. Worked into a lather in wet hands, it lifts the day's oil and grime off the surface and takes it away with the rinse water. A pore looks larger when it is holding more and smaller when the surface around it is smooth and low in shine, which is where a cosmetic step can help. A cleansing water wipes off without rinsing, while a foam needs running water and does a more thorough job of it. The result you can judge yourself is whether your surface feels smoother and looks less shiny by the afternoon.

Key benefits

  • ETUDE Korean-market cleanser, 160 ml
  • The first cleansing step in a routine, used morning and night on a wet face
  • Ships with its Korean barcode and batch code intact, not swapped for an export label

Key actives

Sodium Bicarbonate

The baking soda this line is named for, positioned among the later ingredients, is a mild alkaline exfoliating ingredient Korean cleansers reach for around clogged pores.

Lauric Acid

A fatty acid soap base positioned early on this list, the primary cleansing ingredient that lifts oil and residue from the pores this line is formulated around.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine

A mild, amphoteric surfactant that softens the fatty-acid soap base higher on the list, keeping the cleanse from feeling as stripping as a plain soap alone.

Lactic Acid

An alpha-hydroxy acid at the end of the list, added in a rinse-off cleanser for a light exfoliating finish that pairs with the pore-focused positioning of this foam.

How to use

  1. Wet the face with lukewarm water, since a lather on dry skin drags rather than glides.
  2. Work a small amount into a lather in your palms first, then massage it over the face for about thirty seconds.
  3. Rinse thoroughly, especially along the jaw and hairline where cleanser gets left behind.
  4. Do not use hot water or scrub at the skin, and do not wait for the face to dry before your next step.

Worth knowing

  • Patch test on a small area first if your skin reacts easily to new products.
  • Keep it to the areas that need it rather than the whole face if your cheeks run dry.
