Dimethicone silicone

Dimethicone is the most used cosmetic silicone. It forms a breathable film that smooths the surface, slows water leaving skin, and gives the slip that makes a primer or cream feel silky. It is inert and does not penetrate.

Silica absorbent

Silica is finely milled mineral, essentially very pure sand. It absorbs oil, stops powders clumping and soft-focuses the look of pores and fine lines.

C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate emollient

C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate is a light ester emollient and solvent. It gives a silky finish, dissolves pigments and UV filters, and mildly discourages microbial growth.

Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate emulsifier

Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate is a water-in-oil emulsifier used in balms and rich creams, and a good pigment disperser.

Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer silicone

A silicone elastomer powder. It changes how light falls on skin so texture looks softer, absorbs a little oil, and leaves a dry velvet finish.

Synthetic Wax occlusive

Synthetic Wax is a purpose-built hydrocarbon wax used to structure balms and sticks. It is odourless and does not oxidise, unlike most natural waxes.

Microcrystalline Wax occlusive

Microcrystalline Wax is a fine-crystalled petroleum wax. It gives balms and sticks body and flexibility and holds oil from separating out.

Sorbitan Isostearate emulsifier

Sorbitan Isostearate is a mild emulsifier that holds water into oil, the direction a cleansing balm or an oil-based cream needs.

1,2-Hexanediol humectant

1,2-Hexanediol is a glycol used for two reasons: it holds water like glycerin, and it makes a formula harder for microbes to live in, so less traditional preservative is needed. Korean formulas use it heavily for that second reason.

Caprylyl Glycol preservative booster

Caprylyl Glycol is a glycol that conditions skin and, more importantly, strengthens a preservative system so less of the traditional preservative is needed. It appears in most modern formulas built without parabens.

Caprylic/Capric Glycerides emollient

The partial glycerides of the same short coconut fatty acids used to make caprylic/capric triglyceride. They are lighter than the triglyceride and help dissolve actives.
